Sobon Estate

Founded in 1989, Sobon Estate Vineyards was a second venture for Leon and Shirley Sobon. In 1977, the Sobons established Shenandoah Vineyards which was one of the original wineries in the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County. As a 30 year anniversary gift to one another they purchased the historic D’Agostini Winery which was later renamed the Sobon Estate Winery. Leon’s focus for Sobon Estate wines has been primarily dedicated to Zinfandel. He chose to plant Zinfandel in his Amador County vineyards because he believed that the climate and soil would provide ideal growing conditions for this varietal according to our Sobon Estate wine reviews. Today, Paul Sobon (Leon’s son and head winemaker) has expanded the portfolio producing Syrah, Sangiovese, Barbera, Tannat, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and Rousanne. Sobon Estate 2007 Zinfandel (Fiddletown)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
A thoroughly enjoyable Zinfandel that shows the variety’s lusty character, but with special grace and finesse. Bone dry and richly tannic, it has complex flavors of blackberries, blueberries and currants, with earthier notes of tobacco, leather and unsweetened dark chocolate. Very fine.  — S.H.  (5/1/2010)

A very distinctive Zin that has that purity of flavor and individuality that tells you it comes from a particular piece of earth. It’s dry and earthy-rich, with finely ground tannins reminiscent of espresso.  — S.H.  (11/1/2002)

Shows why this part of the Foothills has achieved such a stellar reputation for Zin. It’s a big wine, packed with sweet cherry, black raspberry, pepper and smoky vanilla flavors, but drinks balanced and gentle.  — S.H.  (11/15/2004)

Sobon Estate 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Amador County)

There’s beautiful blackberry and cassis fruit in this Cab, undergirded by a rich, coffee-infused earthiness. It’s completely dry and the tannins are fairly fierce, but nothing a good steak can’t negotiate. In fact, it’s a great food wine, classy and understated. The best Sobon Cab ever and a great value.  — S.H.  (10/1/2006)

Sobon Estate 2005 Zinfandel (Fiddletown)

Lovely mountain Zin, showing a briary, brambly quality to intensely flavored wild blackberries, blueberries and cherry liqueur. There also are tiers of peppery spices, licorice, chocolate mint and soy. Polished and dry, this fine, complex Zinfandel is drinking well now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Sobon Estate 2001 Rezerve Zinfandel (Shenandoah Valley (CA))

Sleek and smooth, this one’s couched in firm, ripe tannins that frame a core of plush blackberry, cassis, plum and toasty oak flavors. The wine is elegant and long on the finish, well balanced and refined.  — W.E.  (11/1/2003)
