Speri 2008 Vigneto Monte Sant'Urbano Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $80
From one of the Valpolicella’s best producers, this vineyard-designate Amarone is amazingly soft and velvety, with aromas of softly worn leather, moist chewing tobacco, ripe black cherry and barbecue smoke. It’s an elegant but modern rendition, showing power, intensity and impressive length. Best yet, the fruit is young enough to promise more years of graceful aging.  — M.L.  (11/1/2012)

A thick and juicy Amarone with rich layers of chocolate, exotic spice, black cherry, blueberry tart and tobacco. It feels dense and rich in the mouth and its natural heft would stand up to sharp cheddar.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)

Speri 2007 Monte Sant'Urbano Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $78
This gorgeous Amarone opens with beautiful notes of coffee, chocolate and toasted almond followed by fresh red fruit and a piquant touch of green olive. The wine’s texture is thick and velvety but the young tannins require a few more years of bottle aging before they soften.  — M.L.  (12/1/2011)

Speri 1997 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $48
This is A-1 Amarone. It has a classy, traditional prune and chocolate nose, which comes in front of a perfectly pure palate of dried cherry, plum and dark chocolate. The finish answers the challenge, delivering black tea and tannins, but in layer upon airy layer.  — W.E.  (5/1/2003)

Speri 2000 Corvina (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $60
Sweet and rich, with a big overlay of caramel, cola and burnt sugar. Sweet and gooey as that may sound, it has gorgeous balance and does not taste heavy or candied. Still, it’s overtly ripe, as the cherry and plum flavors sing. Lip-smacking good, and fleshy.  — W.E.  (11/1/2005)

Speri 2001 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $60
Pitch black and full of asphalt, tar, coffee and meat aromas. The feel right now is a touch raw due to its youth, but as it sizzles and scours it shows masculine, smoky flavors and a lot of bitter chocolate. Comes on with guns blazing and full tannins. Needs several years to mellow out.  — W.E.  (11/1/2005)
