Starmont 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $27
Pretty good price for a Cabernet this elegant and rich. Starmont is a kind of second label to the excellent producer, Merryvale, and this ’07 shows a fine pedigree, as well as the general quality of the vintage. It’s dry and balanced, with complex blackberry, currant and oak flavors. Drink now–2013.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)

Starmont 2010 Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

This is a wine that offers lots of class at a very good price. It’s marked by flavors of streamlined citrus fruit, Asian pear, honey and a hint of buttered toast. It finishes thoroughly dry. With nearly 37,000 cases produced, this should be relatively easy to find.  — S.H.  (7/1/2012)

Starmont 2011 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $19
A bit of neutral oak has allowed this fresh, bone-dry Sauvignon Blanc to breathe and mellow. It’s made from the Musque clone, which gives it an exotic gooseberry and lime-like grassiness, while one-fifth Sémillon brings needed fatness and oiliness to a wine that otherwise would be severely lean.  — S.H.  (8/1/2012)

Starmont 2007 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $26
A dry, gentle Merlot, likeable for its rich tannic structure and complex flavors. Shows berry, cherry, currant, dark chocolate and sandalwood flavors, with a clean, spicy finish. Drink now with a nice grilled steak, brushed with garlic butter and plenty of pepper.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)

Good, deep flavors of blackberries, currants and spices mark this dry wine. It has a coating of smoky new oak. The texture is a bit harsh, which is really its only minus. Otherwise, it’s a nice Merlot to drink now.  — S.H.  (8/1/2012)

Starmont 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $27
Give this wine more structure, and the score would soar. It’s dry and smooth, with classic blackberry, black currant and cedar flavors that finish long and spicy. But it’s so soft, it feels like it melted in the mouth. Ready now.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Too sweet and oaky, with sugary vanilla and pineapple jam flavors. Could be a Starbucks drink. Saved a bit by crisp acidity.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)

Barely ripe, with green citrus and feline spray aromas and flavors. On the plus side is extreme dryness and crisp acidity. You’ll either love or hate this wine.  — S.H.  (12/1/2010)
