Three Rivers

Founded in 1999, Three Rivers Winery is named after the three most prominent rivers in the appellations from which they source their grapes: the Columbia, Snake, and Walla Walla Rivers. The 18,000 square foot winery and tasting room located in Walla Walla overlooks the surrounding vineyards and is also home to a 3 hole golf course for winery guests. Winemaker Holly Turner blends grapes from various top Washington vineyards in creating the Three Rivers wines. Like most wineries in the area, Three Rivers focuses on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux style blends according to our Three Rivers reviews. They also produce white wines utilizing the local Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Queensryche singer Geoff Tate has teamed up with Three Rivers to produce and label his Insania red and white blends under the Three Rivers label. However it is their top tier reds that tend to receive the highest accolades in looking at our Three Rivers ratings below. Three Rivers Winery is a part of the Foley Family of Wines.

Three Rivers 2001 Biscuit Ridge Vineyard - Late Harvest Gewürztraminer (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

This wine captures much of the fragrant power and floral punch of Alsatian Gewürz, yet despite its late-harvest labeling it’s not cloying, heavy or overly sweet. It is a delight, scented with spices and flowers, tasting of exotic fruits and sweet/dusty spices. — P.G. (9/1/2002)

Three Rivers 2000 Reserve Merlot (Columbia Valley (WA))

The reserve is soft, powerful, smooth and chocolatey. Showing a bit more fruit intensity than the regular bottling, but similar in style, it adds light spice, toast and roasted nuts to the mix of red and black fruits. — P.G. (9/1/2002)

Three Rivers 2000 Boushey Vineyard Syrah (Yakima Valley)

Boushey Vineyard’s Syrah is also singled out by Doug McCrea for single-vineyard status; it’s ripe, complex and has pretty fruit, with pleasing hints of Provençal herbs and a bit of gaminess. Tart and zingy, with vivid presence and a lipsmacking vitality. —P.G. — P.G. (9/1/2002)

Three Rivers 2001 Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley (WA))

This premier vineyard grows some of the state’s best Cabernet: naturally dense, dark, licorice and mineral-infused black cherry fruit. This has some real strength to the fruit, which shows depth, nerve and muscle. There’s a nice high note suggesting citrus, even grapefruit; below that some racy berry fruit flavors; then comes the impact of tannin and espresso. This is pure Syrah from a winemaker who makes a number of single-vineyard and blended Syrahs. This dark, sappy, seductive wine has you from the first sniff.
