Tomero 2006 Gran Reserva Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $50
After the wine opens with a hit of sulfur and rubber, the bouquet turns for the better, ultimately delivering big black-fruit and cola aromas. Deep, driven and thorough in the mouth, it has earthy-berry and plum flavors that finish with notes of oaky coconut, vanilla and chocolate. Drink now.  — M.S.  (8/1/2012)

  1. $12
Tomero is a new line from the Carlos Pulenta group, and this one sings the tale of Salta with sincerity. You get telling acacia and lychee aromas, but none of the cheap perfume that can sometimes ruin the variety. The palate is lightly oily but linear, while the papaya, citrus and melon flavors just roll along.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Tomero 2008 Reserva Petit Verdot (Mendoza)

  1. $23
A bit rooty and smoky on the nose, with grapey, loud flavors of sweet berry, black plum and chocolate. The palate is full of choppy acids that keep it pumping forth, while the finish is richer and more chocolaty, with fig notes. A bruiser, but one that’s very good for varietal PV.  — M.S.  (8/1/2011)

Tomero 2006 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $15
Good red fruit on the opening and spicy. Ripe, intense and warming in the mouth, with a broad-sweeping wave of plum and raspberry. Feels a little creamy and then drying on the finish, with medium depth and lasting heat. Due to high alcohol and a related burn it needs food, i.e. anything off the grill.  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)

Tomero 2008 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $15
Smoky and floral on the nose, and then thick and ripe in the mouth, with syrup to go with medicinal berry flavors. It’s chewy and dense, with chocolate, cream and vanilla to the finish. A bit plodding, but its full weight, feel and depth of fruit push it along.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Tomero 2008 Reserva Sémillon (Mendoza)

  1. $15
Gold in color, with a heavy, mature, resiny nose. But just when you think it’s over the hill and overoaked, the palate offers acidity and character. Flavors of apple, melon and spice are barrel-influenced, while acidity props up the finish. Drink now; contains 10% Chardonnay.  — M.S.  (8/1/2011)
