Tommasi

Tommasi Winery is located in the Pedemonte village in the heart of Valpolicella Classico. The first Tommasi Vineyard was planted in the early 1900s by Giacomo Tommasi. Over the last century it has expanded to more than 330 acres of estate vineyards according to our Tommasi wine reviews. In 1997, Tommasi Vineyards made major investments in vineyard locations and dedicated the funds to the acquisition of lands best suited for their Tommasi wines. Today the estate is run by the 4th generation of the Tommasi family with 6 members working together to produce the wine, manage the operations and export the wine throughout the world. Our Tommasi wine ratings illustrate their success in producing powerful red wines of the Valpolicella Classico region, particularly Amarone. Tommasi wines are also produced from the Lago Di Garda, Soave and Maremma Toscana regions as well. To see which wines are best suited for you check out our Tommasi buying guide below.

Tommasi 1997 Ca'Florian Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $55
Here’s an Amarone with something for everyone. The aromas of leather, smoked meat, tar, cola and menthol combine into a delicious, complex whole. The meaty palate has powerful black cherry fruit and firm, forward acids. And the finish is long and warming, with licorice and spice. Will age well for years to come. Editors’ Choice.  — W.E.  (5/1/2003)

Notes of chocolate fudge, cherry, toasted vanilla and espresso peel off layer after layer to reveal a true star of the Valpolicella. The wine has elements of both classic and modern winemaking with warm oak notes on the heels of red apple and tart cherry.  — M.L.  (12/1/2008)

Tommasi 2001 Ca' Florian Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $68
In contrast to Tommasi’s regular Amarone, this is a darker, richer, more brooding wine, loaded with chocolaty, fudge-like flavors and roasted fruit. It’s mouthfilling and supple, with a lingering finish that bodes well for cellaring, although it’s certainly approachable now.  — J.C.  (10/1/2006)

A bit understated on the nose, yielding just plum and leather at first, but this really blossoms on the palate, revealing layers of black cherry and plum fruit, framed by hints of vanilla and toast. Ripe and round without being heavy, this excellent Amarone finishes with dusty tannins and another gush of fresh fruit, suggesting 10 years of aging is not out of the…  — J.C.  (10/1/2006)

Tommasi 2003 Ca' Florian Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $70
This Amarone offers a very distinctive and evolved nose that recalls espresso grinds, cola and tealeaf with menthol-balsam renderings. Dark concentration, power and great intensity are reinforced by thick berry flavors, coffee and excellent durability on the palate.  — M.L.  (10/1/2007)
