Traslanzas 2006 Tinto del Pais (Cigales)

By far this is the best Traslanzas I’ve come across. It is pure, with aromas of cola, mineral, black cherry and the mildest note of raisin. On the palate, it feels concentrated, with big tannins pushing sweet, dark flavors of blackberry, fig, chocolate and licorice. Tastes lightly toasted and feels big on the finish. Drink now through 2018.  — M.S.  (7/1/2012)

Traslanzas 2000 Tinto del Pais Tempranillo (Cigales)

Rich and inviting, but also sly, with complexity. Aromas of cherry, cola, coffee and hard cheese set a proper stage for roasted cherry, meat, tobacco and toasted vanilla flavors. This is one long, dry, traditional wine, one with fine balance and character.  — M.S.  (5/1/2004)

Traslanzas 2003 Tempranillo (Cigales)

A more exact and rewarding Cigales red than most. It has a spot of mushroom and roughness to the nose, but the palate is well structured, with plenty of kick and some astringency coming from tannic bite, acidity and secondary oak notes. Traslanzas is not a factory wine and this is a strong effort for 2003, a notoriously hot year. Expect even better in 2004 and 2005.  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Traslanzas 2002 Tinto del Pais (Cigales)

  1. $43
A little bit stewy, but this is still a serious, higher-end effort from Cigales that shows nice licorice and tobacco aromas. Velvety and tight on the palate, with restrained raspberry flavors sitting in front of oak-based mocha. Good structure; the acidity keeps it lively and the oak gives it depth.  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)

Traslanzas 2005 Tinto del Pais (Cigales)

  1. $33
Blackberry, tar and raisiny berry aromas rule the dense, dark bouquet, while the palate is short on vitality and large on big, raisiny flavors and prune. More tannic and grabby than smooth and free-flowing, with raisiny afternotes and some bitterness. Good but really ripe; 875 cases made.  — M.S.  (11/1/2010)

There is much to like about this wine, particularly the cola and roasted fruit flavors that control the palate. But in front and back of that likable intermezzo is a sharp, prickly bouquet and a mouthfeel that’s slightly grabby, tannic and elastic. Good but you want it to be better. Drink now.  — M.S.  (8/1/2007)
