Trefethen 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oak Knoll)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $100
This is nearly perfect, a massive, monumental wine whose sheer power is matched only by its grace and refinement. The flavors of blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, buttered toast and cedar flood the mouth, tightly controlled by firm tannins and good acidity. Decant for several hours if you open it now, but better to give it 6–10 years in the bottle.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Trefethen 2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Oak Knoll)

  • Cellar Selection

  1. $50
A monumental Cabernet that succeeds on every level. It’s deep, dark and ultrarich, showing massive blackberries, black currants, dark chocolate, violets, minerals and a touch of sweet, smoky oak. Beyond the flavors is the dramatic structure, with fabulously ripe, dense tannins and a bone-dry, long finish. Surely a tremendous wine capable of long-term aging. Try…  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Trefethen 2007 Halo Cabernet Sauvignon (Oak Knoll)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $175
A bit difficult to approach now, this has tight tannins that lock down the wine with -astringency. Blended with a little Petit Verdot and Malbec, it slowly reveals massive layers of blackberries, cassis liqueur and dark chocolate, remaining stubbornly tight throughout. Many people will drink it soon with beef, and that’s fine, especially with a good decant, but it…  — S.H.  (3/1/2013)

Trefethen 2007 Dragon's Tooth Red Wine (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
Unusually blended from all five Bordeaux varieties with Malbec dominating, this is a wonderfully, rich, complex wine. It shows jammy blackberry and plum flavors, with spice and cocoa overtones and firm, ripe tannins. The finish is dry and long. An impressive introductory wine from Trefethen, off the estate vineyard.  — S.H.  (7/1/2011)

Trefethen 2008 Dragon's Tooth Red Wine (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
This vintage the wine is comprised of Malbec, Cabernet and Petit Verdot. It’s a deeper, darker, richer wine than the ’07, with which it was co-released, and equally high-scoring. Almost sweetly jammy in black cherries, raspberries, cola and caramelized oak, it’s rescued by firm tannins and a finish that dries it out in minerals and spices. Now–2016.  — S.H.  (7/1/2011)

Trefethen 2009 Estate Grown Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oak Knoll)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $100
The structure of this Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes small amounts of other Bordeaux grapes) shows lots of elegance, with refined tannins and acidity, plus a tasteful application of oak. Bone dry, it bears classic blackberry and black currant flavors. It will develop over the next six years, but is drinkable now.  — S.H.  (3/1/2013)

Trefethen 2007 Merlot (Oak Knoll)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $35
Easily one of the best Napa Valley Merlots out there. The cool vintage and southerly valley origins have played a role in giving a firm, dry structure to the cherry, currant, olive, mushu plum sauce and herb flavors. A quality wine, distinctive and complex, and for the price, a relative value.  — S.H.  (3/1/2011)

Trefethen 2009 Dragon's Tooth Red (Napa Valley)

  1. $75
This is so smooth, rich and mellow, you hardly notice how intense the tannins are. But they are hard, and lock down the flavors of black currant and black licorice, plus the complex notes of minerals, roasted game and dark spices. Drink this Malbec-based blend now after decanting and over the next six years.  — S.H.  (3/1/2013)
