Unusual, distinctive, and a wonderful first release from this new brand, a member of the Niven (Baileyana) family of wines. A blend of Tempranillo, Mourvèdre and Grenache, it’s utterly dry, richly tannic and well-structured, with earthy flavors of cherries, blueberries, herbs, unsweetened cocoa, black pepper and other dusty spices. A brilliant and provocative wine…

A wonderfully rewarding wine. It shows the dryness and crisp acidity you want in a savory white, and the fruit flavors, of peaches, grapefruits and green apples, are controlled and subtle. There’s just a touch of oak, which adds softness, and of creamy lees. Brilliant and distinctive. Albariño and Grenache Blanc.

After all those sweet, heavy California rosés, here’s one that truly brims with Provençal-style dry elegance. It’s a wonderful wine, with crisp acidity framing herb and tobacco flavors and suggestions of tart cherries, orange rind and vanilla. Impeccable. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

This unusual blend of Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo and Mourvèdre is the kind of red wine that needs spicy, salty beef or lamb to balance it. It’s tannic, acidic and peppery, with a roasted meat edge to the blackberry fruit. Calls to mind Italian-style fare, rich in olive oil and cheeses.

What a nice wine to drink with almost anything that wants a white wine, from chicken or pork to potstickers. It’s bone dry and brisk in Edna Valley acidity, with flavors of lemons, limes, green apples, minerals and white flowers.

Made from the folks behind Tangent, this blend of Grenache Blanc and Albariño is rich in orange, white flower and roasted almond flavors, brightened by zesty Edna Valley acidity. The oak brings a smoky creaminess and also some caramelized sweetness.

This is very strong in fruit, tasting like the essence of raspberry and cherry, with penetrating acidity. It has a candied jamminess, although the finish is bone dry. Made from Syrah, Tempranillo and Grenache, it’s a fun wine for drinking now with easy fare.
