Brawny just begins to describe this Zin. It’s dry, tannic and full bodied, with powerful wild berry, currant, tobacco and spice flavors that finish in a reprise of tannic bitterness. Nothing shy about this born companion to barbecued ribs.

This is a label from Weibel. With 12% Syrah, it’s a soft, simple wine, with spicy, candied flavors of cherries, raspberries and blackberries. Needs greater acidic structure, but okay for everyday fare.

The price is right, but the wine is pretty ordinary. It’s dry and tart, with less-than-ripe cherry candy and mint flavors and dry, green tannins.
