This is great Zinfandel. The vineyard was planted in 1915 and probably contains other varieties than Zinfandel. Yields are extraordinarily low, as they are in these coastal ancient vineyards. The wine’s concentration is impressive, spanning ripe, crushed raspberries through cherry pie filling to black currants, with all sorts of earthy, minerally, balsam and cedar…

V. Sattui has quietly been producing outstanding Cabernets, and here’s another. The vineyard is on the Rutherford bench, arguably the tenderloin of the appellation. Made from 100% Cabernet, the wine is sumptuously rich and soft in tannins, with sour red-cherry candy, licorice, bacon and pepper spice flavors. Will age well for at least 10 years.

The vineyard has been source of good Zinfandel for V. Sattui, and this is their best yet. The wine is enormously rich and ripe in berry, cherry, currant, mocha and pepper flavors, but its structure really warrants attention. Perfectly firm tannins, fine acidity, and a touch of minerality gives the wine grounding. The alcohol is high, but in keeping with the wine’s…

This high-end Cab is named after a deceased winery employee who would be pleased to have such a distinguished wine in his memory. It’s very powerful and tannic and needs age, but it’s also exceptionally balanced. Showing ripe red and black currant flavors that have been generously oaked, it’s a gorgeous young Napa Valley Cab that should develop through 2014.

This 100% Cabernet shows the deeply concentrated fruit and powerful yet refined tannins of Mount Veeder. It’s packed with black-berries and black currants, with plenty of new French oak. Flashy, but needs time. Should easily unfold over the next 8–9 years.

Delicious, and very different in flavor from the winery’s Carsi bottling. There’s a distinct note of green olive in addition to the array of blackberry, cherry, and sweet tobacco. Once again, lavish oak provides the final treatment, but the wine wears it well.

The vineyard is on the Rutherford Bench. The wine is rich and deeply flavored, with black and red cherry flavors, but it’s also quite tannic. Shows a hard-edged astringency that makes it tough and accentuates the dryness. Morisoli has been home to many famed bottlings, and this one should develop over the next 6–8 years, at least.

A really good Zinfandel, and despite hefty alcohol, it’s dry and balanced. Really delivers those Zin flavors of wild berries, leather, anise, cocoa and cola, and the spices are a wild ride through Asia. With thick, velvety tannins and acidity, it’s a lovely, classy Zin to drink now.
