Valley of the Moon
Valley of the Moon Vineyards and Winery is one of the most historic wine producing establishments within the Sonoma Valley. It has been in operation longer than any other winery in the Glen Ellen area with vineyards originally planted in 1863. The Valley of the Moon Winery is housed in a restored stone and redwood winery built in 1887. The most well-known Valley of the Moon vineyard is a block of old vine Zinfandel planted in the 1940s. More recently plantings of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese and Pinot Blanc have been added, all utilizing sustainable farming practices. Of all the Valley of the Moon wines it is their Cuvée de la Luna Bordeaux-inspired blend that typically receives the highest accolades according to our Valley of the Moon ratings. In 1997 the winery was transformed into a contemporary winemaking facility while maintaining the heritage and tradition of its original structure. Valley of the Moon hasn’t raised the price on this Bordeaux blend for years, which makes it a value for the complexity you get. This isn’t one of those soft, mushy wines that’s all flavor and no structure. Acids and tannins provide the architecture for polished blackberry, black olive and smoky oak flavors that are so appealing.

A Bordeaux blend, and a stylish one at that. Excellent flavors of black currants and cherries, with an herbaceous streak of green olives and sage. Feels light and airy on the palate, yet it’s a serious red wine that should be consumed with good fare. —S.H.

Valley of the Moon 2001 Cuvee de la Luna Red (Sonoma County)

Combining ripe fruit with substantial oak, this Bordeaux blend is another example of how great the ’01 vintage continues to be. The flavors, of cassis, black currants, cocoa and licorice, are impressively deep and long-lasting. Drink now and over the next few years.

Valley of the Moon 1998 Sangiovese (Sonoma County)

Sangiovese still isn’t a major varietal in California but wines like this push it a notch in that direction. You’ll like the pretty berry flavors, integrity of tannins and acidity and rich, dry finish. It’s a terrific food wine. You might find yourself reaching for a third glass of this pretty wine over that luxury Cabernet.

This Bordeaux blend is rich, complex and satisfying. Everything’s reined in, and in balance. The fruity flavor is quite ripe, the tannins smooth and intricate, the oak shadings just right to accompany fine food without competing with it.

This Cal-Ital wine shows the dryness and acidity of a nice Chianti, with the sunshiney fruit of California. Cherries, red and black, mingle with menthol, vanilla, anise and pepper to make for a savory, complicated young wine.

Valley of the Moon 2005 Cuvee de la Luna Red (Sonoma County)

This is the winery’s Bordeaux blend, and it’s almost always quite a good and interesting wine. They’ve held the price steady for many years while maintaining if not increasing quality, to their credit. The 2005 is dry, full-bodied and fairly tannic, with a good balance of fruit, herb and earth flavors. Ready to drink now.

A delicious wine that bodes well for the vintage. Filled with flavors of ripe tropical fruits, peaches and pears, vanilla and buttered toast, in a creamy texture perked up with crisp acidity. Finishes with a smoky, spicy aftertaste.
