A monumental wine. Black-purple in color, with massive, but juvenile, aromas of cassis and white pepper. Huge and explosive in the mouth, coating the palate with blackberry flavors, but very tannic and acidic now.

This is a wine that would benefit from further bottle aging: Just a little earth and anise come through on the nose. It’s tightly wound all around—a little lean, even—but pleasantly so, its juicy, tangy black cherry flavors and lively acidity dominating at this stage. Supple and layered on the palate and through the finish. Drink 2008–2012.

Vasse Felix 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon

Expressive and solid; a pleasure to drink. It starts with complex aromas of pepper and boot leather mixed with flowers and berries. It tastes of cassis, plum and cola, with toasty oak showing up in the finish, mostly after the fine fruit has faded away.

Balanced, elegant and focused, the Heytesbury shows some noticeable wood, but it’s subtle wood, and not mallowy. It’s crisp inthe mouth, with peach, pear and nectarine flavors, and a medium-long finish.

This is one pure, pretty, sturdy Cab. On the palate, black plum and berry fruit is front and center, with oak and caramel most evident on the finish and on the nose. Go ahead, show your guests some love and pour them something that won’t overwhelm dinner.

From a section of Western Oz; wonderful and lively brambly aromas conjure memories of a berry patch in summer. Chocolate and clove nuances add complexity. Solid to the core, with all sorts of red-berry fruit. The cranberry and tart cherry mix nicely with the fine oak shadings.

This is one dark wine, and the aromas are young and fresh, with a heap of blackberry and white chocolate and a hint of something herbal, or licorice. It’s a big, lusty wine, packed with berry flavors and with a solid grip of tannins. Huge and concentrated now, but should soften and gain complexity in time.

Beautifully built—smooth and supple in the mouth, with long, fine tannins, which envelop blackberry and plum flavors. Its fine tannins continue through to the finish, where they turn tealike and a bit oaky. Has earth, vanilla and eucalyptus on the nose.
