This junior version of Ventana’s Maverick Syrah is quite good, with its polished blackberry, plum and coffee flavors and stylish tannins. It’s dry, with a firm tannic grip that will prove an ample match to a leg of lamb. Finishes long and fruity, suggesting midterm ageability.

The best thing about this wine is the acid-tannin balance. Sure, it’s ripe in blackberry and blueberry jam and cocoa flavors, but so are plenty of other red wines. But it has a cool-climate structure that makes it impressive. The Sangiovese in this blend with Cabernet Sauvignon lends a peppery, meaty note.

You don’t get sun-ripened Merlot from Monterey the way you do from warmer inland valleys, but this charming wine might surprise you. Yes, it’s on the earthy side, with hints of sweeter black cherries and some smoky oak, but it’s so well balanced, that it’s really delightful. It’s also very dry, with manageable tannins.

This very good wine flatters the palate with the most succulent citrus, apple and tropical fruit flavors, with just a touch of grassiness. One-half was barrel fermented, adding smoky vanilla notes and a creaminess offset by refreshing tartness. It’s a good value considering the quality.

Deeply colored, with bright and lush fruit balanced by black pepper and hints of thyme and sage. The finish is long and juicy, with layers of fruit and spice.

Pretty much as good as California Gewurz gets. Offers up a myriad of orange, honeysuckle, white peach, fig, cinnamon and vanilla flavors, off-dry. Very nice acidity, bright and shining, preserves balance.

This cool-climate Syrah is firmly structured, and boasts a blast of pepper and herb flavors alongside riper ones of blackberries. This is a young, fresh wine with some complexity. —S.H.

Fresh, lively aromas of citrus, hay, vanilla, and gooseberry, softened by barrel fermentation and oaky-leesy notes. Offers generous fruity flavors and ample acidity. A fresh, clean wine at a very fair price. Best Buy.
