Viña Mayor 2006 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $16
Excellent Ribera crianza here. It has a smooth, appealing bouquet of candied berry fruit, which is followed by a rich palate of cassis, black cherry, prune, chocolate and coffee. For the price point this is right on the money; it’s ripe but also really good and ready to drink.  — M.S.  (6/1/2010)

Viña Mayor 1999 Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $40
A little candied and sweet up front, which is surprising for a wine of eight years. But this one does not seem to be fading, as cherry, tobacco and chocolate flavors float on a bed of zesty acidity. As a result, the wine offers both richness and deftness. Best to drink it soon before it really does start to head south.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)

Viña Mayor 2001 Reserva Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $20
If it weren’t for the drying oak and old-fashioned tart acidity, this would be even more approachable and hence even more likable. But as is, it’s spicy and true to its roots, with pepper and rooty aromas preceding raspberry and cherry flavors. Best with food because it has tightness and snap more than, say, flesh, extract and richness.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)

Viña Mayor 2005 Secreto Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $17
Having tasted Mayor’s wines over the past decade, this might be one of the winery’s best efforts. First off, it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, like some RdDs can. But it does give woodsy oak on top of deep berry aromas and flavors. And all the way through the balance, feel and complexities are here. Drink now through 2009.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)

Viña Mayor 2003 Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $40
A rich and soft-textured wine with dark fruit, raisin, coconut and chocolaty aromas. The palate offers maturity and structure along with black fruit flavors, chocolate, spice and pepper. Turns sweeter and more raisiny on the finish, with brown sugar and toast. Drink now through 2015.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Viña Mayor 2006 Secreto Reserva Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

Attractive and fruity on the front end, this has pure berry aromas but not a lot of nuance or complexity. It narrows a bit on the palate, with tight tannins that support the black fruit and coffee flavors. Juicy, bright and solid on the finish.  — M.S.  (11/1/2012)

Viña Mayor 2009 Halo de Secreto Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

This is punchy and full of potent black-fruit aromas that turn jammy upon airing. It feels lush, thick and chewy, with ripe, dense berry flavors that come with plenty of young oak. Creamy in feel, it features vanilla and resin flavors on the finish. Modern and chunky in style.  — M.S.  (12/31/2012)

Viña Mayor 2008 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

Solid cherry and berry aromas are smooth and appealing, while a spot of pinched leather adds character to the nose. This feels tight and good, with racy acidity leading a red plum flavor to a dry, tight finish. Nice in a no-nonsense way.  — M.S.  (12/31/2012)
