A wine that makes you take notice. The bouquet is intense, with minerality, char, huge black-fruit aromas and handsome shadings of chocolate and coffee. Power and purity come on like gangbusters, and the flavors are a classic mix of blackberry, cassis and fine Swiss chocolate. Heady, smooth and impressive. My highest rated wine yet from Carlos Pulenta’s Vistalba…

Top-notch Malbec blended with other varieties gives Corte A a chance at greatness. In its current juvenile state, the wine is fresh, expressive and exotic on the nose, with mineral, licorice and spice in addition to a lot of driving berry character. The core is a touch racy and acidic, so this is no mushy fruit bomb. Instead it is serious wine with a lot of oak…

Beefy black-fruit aromas are inviting for their accents of licorice, coconut and crushed minerals. Feels lush, layered and intense, the perfect framework for lusty blackberry, toast, mineral and espresso flavors. Long, warm and dense on the finish. Drink now through 2016; made from Malbec, Bonarda and Cab Sauvignon.

Immediately this one shines. The nose offers deep bacon, crusty mineral and hefty, perfectly ripe dark-fruit aromas. Balance is key to the wine's success, with beefy, sweet flavors of black plum offset by some fire and proper acidity. Peppery on the finish, with an overall warm, ripe, toasty personality. Ready to drink now.

Approachable, high in quality and made from a mix of Malbec, Cabernet and Bonarda. Smells of lead pencil, blackberry and dark plum. Feels friendly and smooth, with lightly buttered oak leading licorice, black pepper, chocolate and roasted berry flavors. Offers a lot of good things for the price. Drink now–2015.

Warm and earthy, with a touch of sulfur that subsides with air. The palate is juicy but also sort of rich, and the flavors of mixed red fruits feature a couple of layers of potency that are followed by a compact, medium-length finish.

Carlos Pulenta used to run Trapiche and now that he’s on his own, we should keep on the lookout for his rich, ripe Malbecs and red blends from the Vistalba zone of Mendoza. This heavyweight contains Malbec, Cabernet and Bonarda, and it’s a brawny, ripe, creamy sort of wine with plenty of berry and dark plum character. Very nice now but not quite spectacular; our…

Malbec and Bonarda are the lead grapes in this four-variety blend that shows improvement from the 2004, which was tough. Loads of ripe, dark fruit lead the way, with chewy, dense berry flavors coming next. It’s bolstered by warm, oaky hints that settle on mocha and spice, so it fits the familiar style of what is good Mendoza wine.
