Also labeled “Artisan’s Reserve” (on back label), this sources fruit from what may well be the best Syrah vineyard in the state. The powerful bouquet brings roasted meats, wild herbs, smoke, seaweed, and mountain berry fruit into play. The same mix of earth, herb, fruit and barrel carries on into the mouth. A Syrah lover’s Syrah.

The best of the 2008 Syrah lineup from Walter Dacon, this ultra-smooth wine offers a rainbow of fruit flavors from berry to cherry to plum, set in layers of creamy oak. Caramel and toasted coconut accents fill in the back half, a lingering, seductive denouement.

The Magnifique is Dacon’s top Syrah, a barrel selection from the French oak-aged side of the winery. It’s 98% Syrah, with a splash of Viognier, and indeed it shows a bit more fruit-driven power than the Belle. Blackberry, black cherry and a good lift from streaks of citrus mitigate the overpowering barrel flavors; there’s also plenty of fresh acid to provide extra…

The Magnifique is a barrel selection from the French oak-aged side of the winery. It’s 100% Syrah and packed with blackberry, black cherry and streaks of citrus. It’s very well balanced, complete and firm; the wine should age nicely for another decade at least.

Tight, very dark, smoky and thick, this young wine will benefit from extended breathing time. At first it’s quite bright, slightly volatile, explosive; with breathing time it fleshes out and brings in a rich rainbow of fruit, herb and earth flavors.

A sort of reserve (“crafted from our finest French oak barrels”) this bumps up the amplitude and concentration a notch, and seems to combine the distinctive qualities of the other two C’est Syrahs from Walter Dacon. The fruit includes berries, compote, cherries and plums, there are streaks of pepper and chocolate, and a hint of the garrigue and compost that define…

Rich and toasty, this is a swirl of mocha and raspberry doing a lovely pas de deux. It’s sharp and focused, a little high-toned, and thoroughly delicious.

This is the winery’s French-oaked Syrah. It’s smoky, focused and powerful, with sweet, cedary oak melded to dark, substantial fruit. The tannins are smooth and soft and lead into a creamy, caramel, layered finish. Full throttle, balanced and big.
