Dark and brooding-looking, with an inky-purple robe that’s almost black. The aromas begin with earthy, truffle-and-mushroom notes and slowly open up to reveal plums and other dark stone fruits. Drinks thick, tannic and dry, with a core of plummy-berry fruit. This sturdy, big-boned wine will stand up to rich game, and also will age.

Dark as the grave, and pretty closed in the aroma right now, offering up hints of blackberry, pepper, earth, chocolate and bacon. Tastes late-picked, with pruny flavors and lots of mouth-numbing tannins, although the alcohol is a modest 13.7%. What it lacks in depth and nuance it makes up for with sheer chutzpah.
