Whaler 1999 Flagship Shiraz (Mendocino)

  1. $28
Dark and brooding-looking, with an inky-purple robe that’s almost black. The aromas begin with earthy, truffle-and-mushroom notes and slowly open up to reveal plums and other dark stone fruits. Drinks thick, tannic and dry, with a core of plummy-berry fruit. This sturdy, big-boned wine will stand up to rich game, and also will age.  — S.H.  (12/1/2002)

Whaler 1999 Flagship Zinfandel (Mendocino)

Dark as the grave, and pretty closed in the aroma right now, offering up hints of blackberry, pepper, earth, chocolate and bacon. Tastes late-picked, with pruny flavors and lots of mouth-numbing tannins, although the alcohol is a modest 13.7%. What it lacks in depth and nuance it makes up for with sheer chutzpah.  — S.H.  (11/1/2002)
