Trapiche 2006 Viña Federico Villafañe Single Vineyard Malbec (La Consulta)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
Probably the best value in high-end Malbec from Argentina is Trapiche’s single-vineyard series, which in 2006 was led by this bottling from an Uco Valley vineyard. It’s lush, perfectly ripe and full of cola, black fruit and intensity. There’s nary a chink in its fiber, and the rush of fruit that hits the palate followed by layers of subtleties is impressive. Trapiche 2006 Viña Adriana Venturin Single Vineyard Malbec (La Consulta)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
From a 50+-year-old vineyard in La Consulta in the Uco Valley comes this bold, seriously built Malbec. Black cherry and coconut aromas settle in nicely, followed by forward raspberry, mocha and coffee notes. Great acidity, tannic foundation, structure and fillings; it’s like a happy house. Drink from 2011 through 2015.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Achaval-Ferrer 2006 Finca Altamira Malbec (La Consulta)

  1. $112
One of the most untouched, terroir-driven Malbecs made in Argentina is Achaval-Ferrer’s Altamira. It’s harvested about three weeks earlier than most high-end fruit, resulting in core raspberry flavors and a certain redness of character. The wine is unfined and cloudy but still very clear on the palate, with length, power and class. Best from 2009–2012.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Achaval-Ferrer 2004 Finca Altamira Malbec (La Consulta)

  1. $112
Violet in color and broad as the Argentinean pampas, this single-vineyard Malbec is a powder keg of power. The nose oozes dark fruity and fancy new oak, while the palate is loaded with boysenberry, cassis and black olive. It’s a little linear and tight, but its purity is beyond reproach.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)

  1. $112
Achaval’s Uco Valley single-vineyard Malbec is strapping and minerally, with exotic black-fruit aromas darkened up by road tar but lightened by violets. It’s focused and bright, with juicy cherry and black-plum flavors. Pure and direct, with a long finish. Drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (12/31/2009)

Trapiche 2003 Viña Felipe Villafañe Malbec (La Consulta)

  1. $35
Spicy and woody at first, with tons of black fruit. The nose shows a hint of dill, but for the most part the wine’s pure and full of plum, blackberry, vanilla and good tannins. Firm and loaded, with cola on the finish. Yet another success in Trapiche’s new line of old-vine, single-vineyard Malbecs. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.  — M.S.  (6/1/2006)

Felipe Rutini 2003 Malbec (La Consulta)

  1. $18
Yet again this relatively affordable wine shows the charms and potential of Argentinean Malbec. It has a beautiful color and full, fruity aromas. The palate runs a bit snappy and upright, with cherry-based fruit that will go great with any type of grilled or braised meat. Clean, ripe and tasty, with the slightest bit of perky acids. Imported by Billington Imports.  — M.S.  (4/1/2006)

Trapiche 2007 Viña Fausto Orellana de Escobar Single Vineyard Malbec (La Consulta)

  1. $50
Potent smelling, with black pepper, lots of oak and true berry fruit aromas. The palate is a bit pointed and high in acidity, while the flavors of raspberry, currants and red plum are solid. Finishes a little jagged and acidic, but at worst that staunch acidity will keep it alive for years to come. Hold until at least 2011.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)
