Bodega Chacra 2006 No. 55 Pinot Noir (Río Negro Valley)
-
$100
Hands down, this is the finest Pinot Noir from South America that I’ve ever tasted, and that includes Chile, Argentina and anyplace else. Italy’s Piero Incisa della Rocchetta of Sassicaia fame started this project in 2004, and it’s now finding a groove. This wine is as elegant as Burgundy but as full of flavor as something from California. The color is rosy, the…

Bodega Chacra 2007 No. 55 Pinot Noir (Río Negro Valley)
-
$100
From vines planted in 1955, this is a rose-tinted Pinot with a woven, integrated bouquet of toast, mineral and berry fruits. There’s more Burgundian character here than New World, so it pours on the cerebral scents and flavors of tea, rose hip, strawberry and raspberry. Yacochuya 2000 Malbec (Cafayate)
-
$48
Renowned French consultant Michel Rolland and his wife, Dany, make this bruiser in northern Argentina, and it’s unique to say the least. It sizzles at 16% alcohol, with subdued ink and smoke aromas, fiery flavors of blackberry, licorice and pepper, and firm, probing tannins. Call it a wine warrior’s wine, a collector’s special; and try to cellar it for several…

Colomé 2005 Reserva Red (Calchaqui Valley)
-
$90
About five years into its existence and Colomé has found its groove in this excellent, luscious Malbec-Cabernet blend. The bouquet is exotic and savory, with classic dark-fruit aromas, spice, cocoa and more. Big on the palate, with cassis, wild berry and chocolate flavors, and the finish is big, ripe and sturdy. Good now through 2013.
