Tomero 2007 Torrontés (Salta)

  1. $12
Tomero is a new line from the Carlos Pulenta group, and this one sings the tale of Salta with sincerity. You get telling acacia and lychee aromas, but none of the cheap perfume that can sometimes ruin the variety. The palate is lightly oily but linear, while the papaya, citrus and melon flavors just roll along.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Michel Torino 2008 Ciclos Malbec-Merlot (Salta)

  1. $30
Layered aromas of cassis, berry, coffee and mocha come with regional Cafayate green notes. The palate is lively and offers ribald acidity along with red plum, berry, vanilla, spice and toast flavors. Turns more oaky the longer it’s open, with vanilla and dill on the finish.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Bodegas El Por Venir de los Andes 2005 Amauta Red (Salta)

  1. $20
An improvement over the previous vintage, this blend of Malbec, Cabernet and Syrah from Cafayate is earthy and baked, with savory leather and spice aromas laid over dark berry notes. It’s a ripe, rich wine with meaty plum, berry and cherry flavors. And the mouthfeel is quite good.  — M.S.  (12/1/2007)

Colomé 2010 Torrontés (Salta)

  1. $15
Always one of Argentina’s best and more fuller-bodied Torrontés. It’s tropical and easy on the nose, with fleshy roundness and chunky flavors of melon and peach. Full in style, with some extra weight to the finish. Best to drink this as soon as you can, while it’s fresh and lively.  — M.S.  (5/1/2011)

Michel Torino 2007 Ciclos Malbec-Merlot (Salta)

  1. $30
A funky, individual blend of Merlot and Malbec from the Salta region, with its ups and downs. The nose carries patented Salta aromas of herbs and green bean, but there’s berry scents and oaky mocha to offset that. The palate is forward and shows choppy tannins, while it tastes sweet, herbal and dark. As stated, this is a wine with virtues and pitfalls.  — M.S.  (12/31/2010)

Alamos 2007 Torrontés (Salta)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
With attractive melon and other tropical aromas, this is a Torrontés that rises above the masses. It smells great and tastes like a pure blend of lychee fruit, tangerine and honeydew melon. The palate feel is smooth and round, and the finish is dry, clean and healthy. It’s everything that Torrontés should be. Drink now.  — M.S.  (5/1/2009)

Terrazas de Los Andes 2010 Reserva Torrontés (Salta)

  1. $15
Oily and tropical on the nose, with pungency and clarity. The palate is full, layered, plump and loaded with lychee, honeydew and green herb flavors. Provides good feel and just enough acidity to make for a long ending.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Filus 2010 Torrontés (Salta)

  1. $13
A pretty white wine with lively aromas, flavors and feel. The bouquet issues attractive lychee, melon and vanilla cream aromas, while the palate flows forth with apple, melon and exotic citrus flavors. Just spicy enough on the tail end, with a lasting taste of lychee fruit. Delicate, solid and fresh.  — M.S.  (3/1/2011)
