Bodegas Borbore 2006 Aya Malbec (San Juan)

  • Cellar Selection
Opens with classy, focused leather, herb, spice and black-fruit aromas that are full but not aggressive. Juicy and fresh, wtih cherry, cassis, and raspberry flavors. Revs up and picks up steam on the finish, and the higher acidity level says age it, which isn’t so common for Malbec. Drink now through 2016.  — M.S.  (11/1/2010)

Andean 2004 Finca La Escondida Reserva Chardonnay (San Juan)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $16
A classic modern wine with plenty of vanilla, almond and baked apple on the rich, nutty bouquet. Flavors of peach, toasted nuts and bread are stylish and elegant, while a beam of acidity keeps it perfectly balanced. A great little find from Argentina.  — M.S.  (11/1/2006)

Graffigna 2006 Grand Reserve Malbec (San Juan)

  1. $20
The wine has a dark, crusty top to the nose, with solid berry aromas under that. The palate is bright, zesty and features familiar plum and black cherry flavors. And the finish is straightforward but smooth. Stylish, with a little snap, crackle and pop.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Xumek 2003 Sol Huarpe Malbec (San Juan)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Dark in color and rich on the nose, with marzipan, blackberry and a touch of leather. This is a powerful, modern-style Malbec with exciting, deep fruit and several layers of depth. Mildly syrupy in the middle, but not the least bit out of whack. Hails from the warm, somewhat northern San Juan zone. Imported by Epic Wines.  — M.S.  (12/31/2005)

Graffigna 2008 Centenario Reserve Malbec (San Juan)

  • Best Buy
  1. $13
A rock-solid Malbec with attractive yet simple aromas of black cherry and raspberry. The palate is juicy and fresh, but with enough body to provide a sense of richnes. Forward tasting, with pure berry flavors and a hint of chocolate. The perfect wine for pizza, pasta or grilled meats.  — M.S.  (5/1/2011)

Bodegas Peñaflor 2006 Elementos Chardonnay-Viognier (San Juan)

  • Best Buy
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $13
Nominated for most interesting Best Buy in a long time, this oddball blend of Chardonnay and Viognier is from little-known San Juan Province in Argentina. Blended by the Australian Peter Bright, it’s a full-bodied, barrel-aged wine that’s seemingly oxidized but isn’t. Yellow in color, with roundness, depth and waxy honey, apricot, pineapple and apple flavors. Not a…  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)

Casa Montes 2005 Alzamora Malbec (San Juan)

  1. $30
Dry and lightly balsamic on the nose, with solid fruit aromas that show a marginal level of stem. The palate is stacked with black cherry and blueberry along with full tannins. The finish, however, is surprisingly silky, with chocolate and coconut flavors. A deep, nice, layered wine that has a lot going for it.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Callia 2006 Grand Callia Red (San Juan)

  1. $43
Until now all we’ve tried are Callia’s basic $9 varietals. So this is a big step up in intention, price and power. The bouquet is compact and sweet, with coconut, juniper and foresty aromas. Fresh and slightly grating on the palate, with spunky raspberry and cocoa. Turns more raw and rough as it expands, but overall we like this blend of Shiraz, Tannat, Malbec and…  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)
