Argentinian Wines

Over the past decade Argentina has evolved from a country not well known on the global wine scene to the New World’s fastest growing exporter of wines. The leading grape in Argentina in terms of reputation and quantity is Malbec, a Bordeaux variety imported to Argentina from France in the mid 19th century. Other red varieties produced in Argentina include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Bonarda (known as Charbono in its native Italy), Syrah, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir. Among white wines, the Argentinian wine region’s signature grape is Torrontés, which yields a floral, tropical-tasting wine. The country also produces Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio.

There are seven denominated Argentinian wine regions: Mendoza, Salta, Neuquén, Río Negro, Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan. Among these, Mendoza is the leader in terms of quantity and quality, with roughly 80% of the nation’s wine production centered in this desert region located almost directly across the Andes Mountains from Santiago, Chile, and about 650 miles due west of Buenos Aires. Neuquén and Río Negro, meanwhile, are in southerly Patagonia, while Salta is in the north of the country, near the border with Bolivia (Torrontés is a specialty in Salta); Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan are lesser known regions that mostly satisfy the domestic market.

Wine Enthusiast’s Buying Guide features thousands of Argentine wine ratings from all over the country. Conduct a quick and easy search to find ratings from your favorite producers to access the Argentinian wine guide.

Monteviejo 2007 Lindaflor La Violeta Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $100
Dark and incredibly concentrated, with earth, black fruits, mint and exotic side notes. It’s stout and tannic, but also rich and pure, with monster black fruit flavor and powerful coffee, toast and length on the finish. A smashing wine that’s huge but delicious. Drink now through 2017.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Bodega Catena Zapata 2007 Nicolas Catena Zapata Red (Mendoza)

  1. $120
A ripe, modern success with everything a fan of New World reds might want. The nose is floral and beautiful, with fine oak scents supporting brilliant raspberry, plum and spice aromas. It’s deep, smooth and pressing in the mouth, with a delicious set of blackberry, coconut, vanilla and creamy flavors. A beauty to drink now through 2017.  — M.S.  (3/1/2011)

Bodega Chacra 2006 No. 55 Pinot Noir (Río Negro Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $100
Hands down, this is the finest Pinot Noir from South America that I’ve ever tasted, and that includes Chile, Argentina and anyplace else. Italy’s Piero Incisa della Rocchetta of Sassicaia fame started this project in 2004, and it’s now finding a groove. This wine is as elegant as Burgundy but as full of flavor as something from California. The color is rosy, the…  — M.S.  (10/1/2007)

Bodega Chacra 2007 No. 32 Pinot Noir (Río Negro Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $120
Bodega Chacra is Piero Incisa’s personal project in Rio Negro, Argentina. It is only Pinot Noir, made by esteemed winemaker Hans Vinding Diers. This wine from vines planted in 1932 is linear and intense to the core. It’s an ageworthy specimen with fine acidity and a tight structure. Now, it’s juicy and a little sharp, with piercing black cherry fruit and spice…  — M.S.  (5/1/2009)

Monteviejo 2008 Lindaflor La Violeta Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $125
Much like the previous vintage of La Violeta, this is a fabulous Malbec with depth, density and power to spare. The bouquet yields marzipan, cola, fine leather, char and rich berry aromas. That sets up a palate with impeccable structure and huge flavors of beef jerky, mocha, black fruits and spice. The finish is massive and loaded, with licorice and mocha flavors…  — M.S.  (6/1/2013)

Viña Cobos 2010 Bramare Malbec (Luján de Cuyo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $44
This lush, modern Malbec explodes with power then simmers with complexities. Opaque in color, the bouquet issues intense blackberry, lemon peel, graphite and toast aromas. In the mouth, it’s full but not flabby, and then comes an avalanche of black-fruit flavors matched by notes of spice cake, molasses, pepper and mocha. It’s warm, toasty and full of licorice on…  — M.S.  (5/1/2013)

Viña Alicia 2008 Coleccion de Familia Brote Negro Malbec (Luján de Cuyo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $90
This small-production Malbec is superb. The bouquet smells mossy, earthy, dense and loaded with smooth berry aromas. It’s lush, deep and well balanced on the palate, with powerful black-fruit flavors along with fudge, tobacco and cola notes. The feel, flavors and length are all top quality. Drink now–2018; only 230 cases were made.  — M.S.  (10/1/2012)

Trapiche 2009 Finca Domingo F. Sarmiento Single Vineyard Malbec (La Consulta)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
This smells as deep as an ocean trench, with mint, cola, blackberry and toast aromas all rolled into a tight bomb that’s ready to explode. It feels balanced yet densely concentrated, with wild berry, tobacco, savory spice and even a mild saucy component. This finishes smooth, with integrated leather, herb and berry flavors. Drink any time over the next 5–6 years.  — M.S.  (10/1/2012)
