Brokenwood 2002 Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz (Hunter Valley)

  1. $100
A gorgeous wine that defies the modern idea that wines have to be big and brash to be excellent. This one feels simultaneously fresh and old as the hills, with a meaty, merdy appeal. Red fruit aromas and flavors are concentrated and sprinkled in black pepper; the tannins are manageable now, but still substantial enough to age. A modest 13.5% alcohol, and, bless ’em…  — D.T.  (8/1/2005)

De Bortoli 2007 Noble One Bortytis Sémillon (New South Wales)

Enthusiast 100 2011 Score Chasers: NZ & AU 2011
De Bortoli’s Noble One is as good as ever in 2007, offering intense botrytis, dried apricots, honey and bergamot in a sweetly unctuous style. Think of a Sauternes, but with more sugar and less alcohol. It should age well for 10 or more years.  — J.C.  (11/1/2011)

De Bortoli 2006 Noble One Botrytis Sémillon (New South Wales)

  1. $32
This wine’s deep brassy color suggests honey, and the aromas of honey, dried apricots, vanilla and baking spices reinforce that suggestion of sweetness. On the palate, it delivers honeyed richness and a complex array of flavors balanced by decent acidity. It remains the standard bearer for Australian botrytis wines.  — J.C.  (12/15/2008)

Barwang 1996 Winemaker's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (New South Wales)

  1. $25
The fruit here comes exclusively from the winery’s namesake vineyard in the Hilltops district. Cassis-like aromatics with a slight herbal cool streak. Excellent depth of Cabernet fruit, lots of dark blackberry flavor, with touches of cedar and cigar box. Rich mouthfeel and a long, round, palate-caressing finish. Beautifully made and very satisfying.  — W.E.  (12/1/1999)

Top 100 Cellar Selections 2011 Score Chasers: NZ & AU 2011
Brokenwood’s three current-release Semillons, this one gets the nod as the most complete. It’s light to medium in weight, but oh so long and precise on the finish, and intense yet seemingly transparent, like spider’s silk, with fleeting glimpses of wet stones and moss. Try between 2015 and 2025.  — J.C.  (11/1/2011)

Rosemount 1999 Show Reserve Chardonnay (Hunter Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Powerful and clean, this Chard opens with pronounced aromas of citrus and peaches, underscored by honey, smoke and butter. The wine is tight and complex, seemingly wrapped in a minerally, iron straightjacket now, but with good aging possibilities; the long finish also supports this hypothesis. High acidity boosts the impression of strength and cleanliness. Editors’…  — S.H.  (6/1/2001)
