Brokenwood 2002 Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz (Hunter Valley)

  1. $100
A gorgeous wine that defies the modern idea that wines have to be big and brash to be excellent. This one feels simultaneously fresh and old as the hills, with a meaty, merdy appeal. Red fruit aromas and flavors are concentrated and sprinkled in black pepper; the tannins are manageable now, but still substantial enough to age. A modest 13.5% alcohol, and, bless ’em…  — D.T.  (8/1/2005)

Top 100 Cellar Selections 2011 Score Chasers: NZ & AU 2011
Brokenwood’s three current-release Semillons, this one gets the nod as the most complete. It’s light to medium in weight, but oh so long and precise on the finish, and intense yet seemingly transparent, like spider’s silk, with fleeting glimpses of wet stones and moss. Try between 2015 and 2025.  — J.C.  (11/1/2011)

Rosemount 1999 Show Reserve Chardonnay (Hunter Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Powerful and clean, this Chard opens with pronounced aromas of citrus and peaches, underscored by honey, smoke and butter. The wine is tight and complex, seemingly wrapped in a minerally, iron straightjacket now, but with good aging possibilities; the long finish also supports this hypothesis. High acidity boosts the impression of strength and cleanliness. Editors’…  — S.H.  (6/1/2001)

Brokenwood 2007 Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz (Hunter Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $125
One of the Hunter Valley’s top bottlings, Brokenwood’s Graveyard Vineyard is still marked by hints of toasty oak at this young stage in its evolution. Vanilla accents lifted sour cherry and cranberry aromas, but on the palate the flavors darken and deepen, trending toward black cherries and plum. Has a nicely balanced, silky texture in the mouth, then a firm, long…  — J.C.  (2/1/2010)

Meerea Park 2005 Terracotta Shiraz (Hunter Valley)

A 5% addition of Viognier has helped to round out the mouthfeel of this top-notch Hunter Valley Shiraz. Allandale 2002 Matthew Shiraz (Hunter Valley)

  1. $20
This is a very classy Shiraz with aromas of clay and earth, and crisp plum and cherry fruit at its core. It’s not a broad wine, yet it really does leave a powerful impression on the palate. Medium-sized and Old World in style; drink after 2008. Imported by Davies & Co.  — D.T.  (4/1/2006)

McGuigan 1999 Genus 4 Shiraz (Hunter Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Yummy aromas of cola, plum pie and smoked meats start off this well-priced, stately Shiraz. And nothing that follows disappoints. The palate is full yet balanced, with spicy plum-styled fruit and enough acidity to preserve the juicy feel. The finish is smooth and just about perfect. This is neither overdone nor wimpy. In a word, it’s complete. Editors’ Choice. —M.S.  — M.S.  (3/1/2003)
