Montes 2004 Folly Syrah (Apalta)

  1. $93
Opens with tobacco, leather and prune, and two sniffs is all you need to determine that this is something special. The ’04 Folly seems more subdued and maybe a bit more balanced than previous efforts, which stressed power and extract. This wine has some snap to go with the expected black fruit, chocolate and black olive flavors and accents.  — M.S.  (5/1/2007)

Montes 2005 Alpha M Red (Apalta)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $82
Who said Chile doesn’t make cellar-worthy reds? This vintage of Montes Alpha M is well-oaked, strapped and structured. Early attackers will find coconut, mocha and chocolate running the show, but if you hold the wine for another two to five years, it will likely settle, balance out and become an excellent model for what is high-end Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon (with…  — M.S.  (5/1/2008)

Santa Rita 2005 Pehuén Carmenère (Apalta)

  1. $70
In just its second vintage, this high-end Carmenère is worthy of praise. The bouquet is well-built on aromas of mint, chocolate and herb-infused black fruit, and the palate feel is woven from fine tannins, generous extraction and good acids. Flavors of lush plum, berry, vanilla, spice and coffee make for serious drinking and pondering. Best now through 2010. Only…  — M.S.  (9/1/2009)

Montes 2005 Folly Syrah (Apalta)

  1. $82
Minty, creamy and as oaky as can be. Coconut, sawdust, carob and other barrel-based aromas steal the nose, with secondary black fruit and thick tannins composing the palate. This is a ripped, high-alcohol, almost soupy Syrah that in some people’s eye may seem overdone and too woody. But the fruit is of unquestionable high quality, and if you give it time to air out…  — M.S.  (5/1/2008)

Santa Rita 2002 Floresta Apalta Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Apalta)

  1. $28
Quite floral despite having spent 14 months in French oak. With 15% Maipo fruit in the blend, the wine veers toward raspberry and cherry, while the finish is darker, dealing licorice and some fudge. Has the right acid-tannin balance. Powerful enough without being tough.  — M.S.  (11/15/2004)

Santa Rita 2004 Pehuén Carmenère (Apalta)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $60
Blackberry and spice are the lead aromas, and behind that there’s mocha and a bit of forest. The palate features bright acidity and depth, yet the herbal-influenced flavors don’t go much beyond simple berry and leather. Has its merits such as texture and grip, but could use a bit more to justify the price.  — M.S.  (3/1/2008)

Veranda 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon-Carmenère (Apalta)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Olive, cracked black pepper and rhubarb-like aromas lead to a generic, semisweet palate with berry and chocolate flavors. Seems a little creamy and aggressive in the mouth, with murky chocolate and leathery notes finishing things off.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)
