Spice and pepper aromas come with hints of green herbs, olive and standard berry fruit. Feels stretched out and grating, with herbal, olive flavors along with green-infused berry and cassis. Herbal on the finish.  — M.S.  (2/1/2012)

Casa Silva 2010 Reserva Carmenère (Colchagua Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $12
Plum and berry aromas carry a foxy, feral element. It feels full and grabby, with herbal, spicy flavors of plum and berry. Defined by its average length and flavors of pepper, green and black olives, and green herbs, this is old-school Carmenère.  — M.S.  (9/1/2012)

Sombras del Sol 2011 Merlot (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $8
The nose is a bit prickly and jumpy, with a candied red-fruit aroma. On the palate, there’s some grab and stickiness along with flavors of mint, woo-driven spice and berry fruit. It loses some character on the finish.  — M.S.  (3/1/2013)

Guelbenzu 2003 Hoppe Cabernet Sauvignon-Carmenère (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $15
The blend is 50-50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, and the end result seems a touch dull and reserved. There’s coconut and blackberry on the nose, but the aromas are quiet. The palate, however, is loud, with grape, vanilla and coconut flavors. Seems to be not in the best harmony. Imported by Classical Wines.  — M.S.  (3/1/2006)

J. & F. Lurton 2003 Araucano Clos de Lolol Cabernet Sauvignon-Carmenère (Colchagua Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Razor-sharp acidity and zest is the thing that overrides this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère. At first the zip almost cuts through the palate, and only airing and patience brings it back to ground level. As it opens some cherry and raspberry enters the scene. Arguably too sharp for a blend of these two friendly grapes.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Montes 2006 Limited Selection - Apalta Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon-Carmenère (Colchagua Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $16
Burnt coffee, leaves and herbal aromas give the wine an awkward bouquet. There is big-time oak, and it creates a creamy, unctuous mouthfeel and resiny marshmallow flavors. It has its berry foundation, size and weight, but it seems candied, simple and overoaked.  — M.S.  (3/1/2008)

Undurraga 2006 Aliwen Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $10
Raw and spicy aromas greet you, with floral, more rosy scents offering backup. The palate is fresh to the point of crisp, but not very detailed or stylish. And the finish is like hitting a cement pad without padding. Seems a little rough and tumble, and not very detailed.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Viña Santacruz 2007 Chamán Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah (Colchagua Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $14
Fairly gritty and reduced at first, with aromas of grilled beef, leather and herbs. After some airing it rounds out to show flavors of raspberry and sweet red fruits, while the feel is chewy, full and candied. Never really gets it going but not bad for a basic Chilean red blend.  — M.S.  (9/1/2009)
