Miguel Torres 2003 Manso de Velasco Viejas Viñas Cabernet Sauvignon (Curicó Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $32
One of the more legendary wines from Chile, one we look forward to reviewing. The ’03 model is almost mossy and beet-based on the nose, but give that denseness a pass and head to the luscious black cherry and licorice that layers the palate. Heady stuff for certain; drink within a few years. Imported by Dreyfus, Ashby & Co.  — M.S.  (7/1/2006)

Montes 2004 Late Harvest Botrytised Gewürztraminer-Riesling (Curicó Valley)

  1. $24
A spectacular dessert wine from South America; probably the best we’ve had to date. Amber in color, with intoxicating aromas of baked pineapple and orange liqueur. Caramel, toffee, burnt vanilla and more cruise on the palate, all pushed by perky acidity. Sensational flavor and balance. A hidden gem among the world’s best sweeties. Imported by T.G.I.C. Importers.  — M.S.  (5/1/2006)

Miguel Torres 1999 Cordillera Red (Curicó Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $26
A blend of old-vine Cariñena (60%), Syrah (25%) and Merlot (15%). The color is impressively dark and so is the fruit—mainly plums and blackberries. Toast and dried spices from new oak give an additional impression of opulence. But even more impressive is the balance. This is no low-acid, fruit-and-oak wonder; the natural acidity of the Carignane shines through…  — J.C.  (2/1/2001)

Montes 1998 Alpha Special Cuvée Chardonnay (Curicó Valley)

  1. $20
This one clicks on all cylinders. Mild and comported in the nose, with peach and banana aromas. It dances on the palate with lemon, butter, more peach and a slight melony note. On the finish, it just slips away gracefully. One of Chile’s best efforts with white wine.  — M.S.  (5/1/2000)

Odfjell 2003 Orzada Malbec (Curicó Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Exceedingly fruity, with graham cracker and jelly bean aromas. It’s a berry lover’s paradise, with bold, jammy flavors pushed by pulsating acidity. Very racy and nice, with purity and lots of depth. Editors’ Choice.  — M.S.  (11/1/2005)

Miguel Torres 2001 Manso de Velasco Cabernet Sauvignon (Curicó Valley)

  1. $37
Tight at first, with almost confounding aromas of tar, black plum and herbs. Airing, however, turns it plush, with a heavy dose of fine tannins pushing powerful plum and cassis. A baby now, as is evident by how the finish goes from short to lengthy in no time. A real bruiser from Torres’ Chilean outpost. Hold through 2007. Imported by Five Star Fine Products.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Miguel Torres 2006 Manso de Velasco Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon (Curicó Valley)

  1. $35
Stocky on the nose, with a mix of leather, smoked meat, sauvage fruit and aromatic integrity. Saturated in terms of feel but not heavy or clunky, Manso offers heady balsamic, tobacco and baked berry flavors. Cuddly and never aggressive, it should be drunk now and over the next three years.  — M.S.  (9/1/2009)

Aresti 2007 Family Collection Red (Curicó Valley)

  1. $24
This wine has traveled miles in the right direction compared to its early incarnations. It’s piercing and potent up front, with cigar box, mocha, toast and coffee aromas in addition to fine flavors of tobacco, cassis, vanilla and lightly baked berry and cassis. Finishes wavy and long; 50% Syrah along with Merlot, Cab and Carmenère.  — M.S.  (12/31/2011)
