François Lurton 2007 Hacienda Araucano Alka Carmenère (Lolol Valley)

  1. $60
Lavender, thyme, rosemary and other green herb notes dot the nose, which leads to a solid, cushioned palate with sweet berry, leaf, spice and carob flavors. Finishes sweet, with melted chocolate and heft. Just short of excellent but still the best Carmenère yet from François Lurton’s Colchagua property.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

J. & F. Lurton 2009 Hacienda Araucano Clos de Lolol Red (Lolol Valley)

  1. $23
Slightly clipped and hard on the bouquet, which is narrow and settles on berry fruit. Feels chunky and bottom-weighted, with dark flavors of black fruits, plum and boysenberry. Becomes more stylish with airing, but it’s always fairly hard and compact in character.  — M.S.  (2/1/2012)

François Lurton 2008 Hacienda Araucano Humo Blanco Sauvignon Blanc (Lolol Valley)

  1. $22
The yellow color and doughnutty, honeyed aromas give it away: this is barrel-fermented, Bordeaux-style SB. The nose is barrique heaven, but the vanilla and resin qualities are stylish. Creamy but balanced in the mouth, with flavors of oak, vanilla, spice, honey and baked apple. Smooth stuff but very oaky, and not for everyone.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

  1. $11
Fresh and chiseled on the bouquet, with lettuce leaf, green-fruit aromas and white pepper. The palate is elegant, lean and balanced, with green-fruit flavors of lime and kiwi as well as citrusy grapefruit. An honest SB that won’t steer you wrong.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

François Lurton 2008 Hacienda Araucano Clos de Lolol Red (Lolol Valley)

  1. $23
An earthy, dense four-grape blend that issues floral, cherry aromas in front of a creamy, candied palate that sports generic but nice plum, berry and cherry flavors. A smooth wine but one without much complexity; seems to have lost some of its identity in the blending process.  — M.S.  (6/1/2011)

François Lurton 2008 Hacienda Araucano Humo Blanco Pinot Noir (Lolol Valley)

  1. $22
Sweet marshmallow and strawberry aromas turn drier and spicier with air, while the palate is full-bodied and a little flat, with baked brown sugar and berry flavors. Long and showing both vanilla and butter on the finish, which doesn’t offer a whole lot of fruit before fading fast.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

François Lurton 2011 Hacienda Araucano Reserva Sauvignon Blanc (Lolol Valley)

  1. $11
A mineral touch graces the bouquet, which is otherwise regular and salinic, with a touch of sweet animal cracker. Medium in weight, with citrusy acidity, pithy grapefruit and lime flavors. Tangy but calm on the finish, with a final dose of citrus pith.  — M.S.  (12/31/2011)

Yali 2011 Wetland Winemaker’s Selection Sauvignon Blanc (Lolol Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $8
A middle-tier wine that’s honest and good for the money. Smells of spunky citrus fruit and vanilla, then offers a tight, minerally palate with a mix of white peach, lemon and lime flavors. Crisp and quick on the finish, with a lemony aftertaste.  — M.S.  (6/1/2012)
