Aged in new American oak for 20 months, this wine has intense aromas of vanilla and toast, but that’s backed by ample blackberry, black cherry and raspberry scents. It’s a juicy, medium-weight wine, not overly rich, but packed with raspberries, dried herbs and brown sugar. Finishes long and toasty—and might be more reminiscent of some Riojas than most Chilean wines…

Gillmore 2005 Hacedor de Mundos Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Loncomilla Valley)

Solid, juicy Cabernet that has a lot of fresh berry and black cherry on the nose. The mouth is forward and fruity, with slick plum, berry and cherry flavors. Not the most complex or layered Cab you’ll find but it sure is good, thick and tasty. Powerful, too.

Gillmore 2005 Hacedor de Mundos Reserva Cabernet Franc (Loncomilla Valley)

New World Cabernet Franc with none of France’s leafiness but a whole lot of ribald black fruit. Maybe a touch more herbal and spicy than Gillmore’s Cab Sauvignon; it has good depth, lots of fruit, sweetness and richness. Lip-smacking, tannic and a lot like Carmenère in terms of weight and herbal influence.

Morandé 2006 Edicion Limitada Carignan (Loncomilla Valley)

A snappy, ageworthy Carignan from 58-year-old vines. Fresh as can be, with dynamic red-fruit flavors coming on top of earthy, mineral-laden aromas. Firm to the point of being sharp, but then it dials back to show a mellower side. Could age for a decade or more due to its acid level and structure. A true old-vines winner.

Cremaschi Furlotti 2009 Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Loncomilla Valley)

Smoky on the nose, with a hint of rubber and good red-fruit purity. Feels tight, with modest tannic grab and dark flavors of baked berry, leather and earthy density. Shows complexity on the finish via tobacco and light herbal notes.

Lots of color and dark fruit, but a little too generic to score higher. This is a smooth, polished wine with blackberry, cassis and licorice aromas and flavors. It doesn’t vary much from its core identity but it’s healthy, structured and not short on tannins and acidity. Expect more from the 2006 vintage.

An aggressive, forward, high-acid wine with a lot of quality as well. The nose mixes dried cheese, leather, heat and savory red fruit aromas, while the palate rides a tight line of acidity toward angular raspberry and cherry flavors. Very zesty, tart and lively, but also deep in terms of minerality, freshness and potency. Drink now through 2012.

Smells scratchy and lemony, with hints of vanilla, coconut and other barrel-driven scents. Feels scratchy like the nose, with a decent mouthfeel and tangy red-fruit flavors blended with sweeter vanilla and candied notes. Oaky, sweet and short on the finish.
