Concha y Toro 2003 Carmín de Peumo Carmenère (Peumo)

  1. $74
Setting a new high bar for Carmenère is this luxury version from Concha y Toro’s Cachapoal vineyard. And while it deserves to be drunk sooner than later, we recommend it for the best steak you grill this year. It’s a strapped, juicy wine with tons of coffee, chocolate and berry essence. It’s too hard or layered, so get at it soon for its up-front fruit and character.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Concha y Toro 2005 Carmín de Peumo Carmenère (Peumo)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $125
For serious Carmenère, Carmín is at the top of the list. It’s almost late-harvest in terms of richness and ripeness, with earth, leather, mineral, pepper, plum and berry on the nose. Dense and balanced, yet a little on the soft side, with meaty raspberry and plum flavors. Finishes dark, with coffee, toast and leather. A cuddly, chewy wine to drink now for all its…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Concha y Toro 2007 Terrunyo Vineyard Selection Block 27 Carmenère (Peumo)

  1. $38
Big, stout and solid, with a smoky, pure-fruit nose that’s very attractive. Lush and full in the mouth, with pure, deep, intoxicating flavors of blackberrry, black currant and Mediterranean black olive. Solid throughout and holds its form across the finish. Ripe, smooth and delicious. Drink now thru 2012.  — M.S.  (2/1/2011)

Concha y Toro 2007 Terrunyo Vineyard Selection Block 34 Syrah (Peumo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
Muscled up and dark, with robust blackberry, tar, spice and mocha aromas. The palate is big and dense but raring to run, with smashing black cherry, berry and black plum lushness. Turns more oaky on the finish, with coconut and mocha. Impressive for New World Syrah. Drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (2/1/2011)

Concha y Toro 1999 Terrunyo Carmenère (Peumo)

  1. $29
If Carmenère is going to attract a global following, it’s going to do it on the backs of wines like this. Made from grapes hailing predominantly from a subsection of the Rapel Valley, this is a thick, earthy, meaty wine with sweet and chewy black plums and ripe cherries at its core. The mouthfeel is a tad leathery, with a very firm grip. With about 15% Maipo…  — M.S.  (3/1/2002)

Concha y Toro 2000 Terrunyo Carmenère (Peumo)

  1. $29
Berry aromas are followed by a round, wholesomeness that can’t be criticized. The palate is unlike many a Carmenère because it eschews the herbal, green element that’s inherent to the grape, and instead offers plum, blackberry and all the richness one can conjure. A round, finish of light oak and vanilla seals it all in fine fashion. Surely the most jammy…  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)

Concha y Toro 2004 Marques de Casa Concha Syrah (Peumo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $19
Perfectly open and huge, with deep plum and black fruit smothering both the bouquet and palate. Over the past couple of years this wine has distinguished itself as a bruiser with charm. And while it may show very little in common with Rhône-style Syrah, for a Chilean version it rocks. Look for huge berry flavors and excellent balancing acids and tannins.  — M.S.  (10/1/2006)

Some of the best-bred Carmenères in the world are grown in Peumo, and a star example is this saturated, minty wine with medium-weight tannins and a long finish. It’s lush, powerful and along the way you taste pepper, chocolate, berries and sunshine.  — M.S.  (3/1/2008)
