Concha y Toro 2006 Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon (Puente Alto)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $80
The price for one of Chile’s flagship wines keeps climbing, but fortunately so does the quality. Winemaker Enrique Tirado has crafted yet another pounding, saturated Cabernet. It’s wonderfully meshed yet potent and fierce. Boysenberry, cassis and kirsch flavors control the extracted palate, while the finish is warm, creamy and fun, sort of like a milkshake. At 14…  — M.S.  (5/1/2009)

Almaviva 2003 Red (Puente Alto)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $75
Impressive in every way. The color shines an irridescent ruby, while the bouquet is massive, an amalgamation of fresh-cut cedar, pencil lead and lush berry fruit. Ripe as can be and balanced, with plushness and depth you don’t normally find. Finishes round and creamy, with vanilla and liqueur notes. Does not require cellaring but should hold for up to 10 years.  — M.S.  (10/1/2006)

Enthusiast 100 2011
Dark, toasty and minerally to start with, then throw in some olive, herb and cassis and it’s pure Maipo Cabernet at its best. The palate is deep, layered and lush, with a smooth, elegant yet lusty flow of cassis, berry, olive and herbal flavors. Fine on the finish, with mild barrel-influenced chocolate. Ready to drink but could be cellared for another 4–5 years.  — M.S.  (6/1/2011)

Concha y Toro 2007 Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon (Puente Alto)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $95
Deep, a bit reduced on the nose, and full as can be, with blackberry, cassis and prune aromas. The palate is super rich and concentrated, and frankly a bit heady. Flavors of burnt brown sugar, toast, tobacco, pepper and baked berry fruits are delicious, and the finish is dense and long. Drinkable now but best in another two to four years. This marks the 20th…  — M.S.  (12/1/2010)

Concha y Toro 2005 Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon (Puente Alto)

  1. $69
This comes across as the best Don Melchor that Concha y Toro has produced, and at $69 it should be. It’s very ripe, with oak sitting atop pure cassis and plum aromas. The palate is sweet, juicy and packed with dynamite blackberry and black plum flavors. Dark, chocolaty and long on the finish, with ripe tannins. Drink now or hold for five years.  — M.S.  (9/1/2008)

Almaviva 1998 Red (Puente Alto)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $87
A dense bouquet of dark cherries, plum, earth, meat and subtle tobacco pulls you in. It is big in the mouth, yet never brutish, with lovely depth of fruit flavor, earthy accents and great texture. The fine, long finish has even, dry tannins. Seductively accessible, this world class wine will age well for 6–12 years or longer.  — M.M.  (2/1/2001)

Concha y Toro 2004 Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon (Puente Alto)

  1. $50
In recent years, with winemaker Enrique Tirado firmly at the helm, Don Melchor has gotten better and better. And while 2004 was an average year in Chile, this ranks as the best Melchor we’ve sampled. The wine has beautiful blackberry, cola and pepper aromas in front of cassis, cherry, plum, nutmeg and cinnamon flavors. It’s brawny but balanced, with excellent…  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)
