This handsomely built Cabernet from a subappellation of Curicó has a winning nose of black currants, spices and chocolate. The mouthfeel is rich, almost lush, with cassis, licorice and dark-chocolate flavors. Finishes long and smooth, and offers very good balance along with a lot of flavor and texture. Aresti 1999 Family Collection Cabernet Sauvignon (Rio Claro)

  1. $26
Toast and bacon from the new-oak aging compete with smoked meat and blackberry on the bountiful nose. Plum and cassis fruit dance on the palate, and ultimately there’s a lot of power to this first-ever prestige bottling by Aresti. With 15% Merlot and Carmenère.  — M.S.  (3/1/2002)

Well-defined aromas of plum and black cherry with a nice cool menthol note mark this wine. Shows very good Merlot typicity, with plum and cocoa flavors buttressed by spicy oak. Aromas of lime, vanilla and lavender open this rather creamy offering. The flavors are mild, with melon, soft citrus, and a smoky quality. Medium-weight, with a supple, full mouthfeel and a dry, slightly spicy and nutty finish.  — W.E.  (9/1/2000)

Aresti 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Rio Claro)

  1. $14
A solid wine with a good mix of herbal, cola and red-fruit aromas. It deals spanking red fruit flavors and a sprinkle of vanilla and chocolate on the racy finish. For a short, fresh and clean wine, Aresti’s Cab makes the grade.  — M.S.  (5/1/2008)

Aresti 2000 Reserve Merlot (Rio Claro)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
This clean, crisp Merlot is smoky, with ample black fruit in the nose. The sweet, pure black-fruit palate is just as it ought to be, and the black cherry and coffee flavors work together on the finish.  — M.S.  (3/1/2002)

Aresti 2001 Reserve Carmenère (Rio Claro)

  1. $11
There is some green bean and ashtray aromas on the nose, but also some maple-like wood. The palate is also slightly green at its center, but surrounding that is a fair amount of plum and cranberry. The finish is smooth, properly textured and tannic enough to create a dry, cheek-gripping feel. There’s definitely some character here.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)

Aresti 2000 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Rio Claro)

  1. $11
An initial aromatic check reveals some cheesy, funky smells, but they blow off to reveal a solid, everyday red wine. The palate is surprisingly rich, and it tastes of boysenberry fruit. The finish has some zip and length to it, and also some overt oaky flavor. Sure, it’s thin and easy by big-wine standards, but within its class of value-priced reds it’s sturdy and…  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)
