Georges Duboeuf 2009 Prestige Gamay (Juliénas)
With the embossed bottle and the extra years aging, Duboeuf’s Prestige range does have an extra quality. This Juliénas is ripe, concentrated, a powerful expression of Gamay with a more serious intent.

Pascal Aufranc 2009 Les Crots Vieilles Vignes Gamay (Juliénas)
Cellar Selection
Price
$22
Despite its underlying richness, this is a very structured wine, solidly based on dry tannins and firm acidity. This texture, which is also given extra liveliness by its red cherry fruits, suggests a wine for aging over 2–3 years.

Gaël Martin 2009 Les Fouillouses Gamay (Juliénas)
Online Exclusive
A structured wine, with some tight black cherry flavors as well as firm tannins. The wine has a mineral edge, the acidity giving a juicy character to the fruit, while the texture is dry, tannic. Age for a year.

Georges Duboeuf 2008 Château des Capitans Gamay (Juliénas)
Online Exclusive
The Duboeuf family property on the edge of the village of Juliénas produces a satisfyingly full-bodied wine, its fruit and tannins offering balance and ripeness. Acidity and cherry flavors are dominant over the dry core.

As we brace ourselves for the crush of this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau, it’s worth remembering that last year was the year that the region’s most famous négociant described as “the vintage [that] may turn out to be the greatest vintage of my career.” It’s not the nouveau that turns the “may” into a “will”—it’s cru wines like this fragrant, intensely concentrated…

Pascal Aufranc 2007 Gamay (Juliénas)
Price
$17
A deeply concentrated wine that makes full use of its tannins to go for black fruits, some sweetness and a final dense texture. It has power, but the fruit is still refreshing with its acidity, balancing each other in a comfortable double act.
