Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes 2006 Javernières Gamay (Morgon)

  • Cellar Selection
A majestic wine, great Beaujolais by any standard. The fruit is tense, structured, dense, with black figs, strawberry jelly and ripe red plums fitting well into the texture. It manages to be both fruity and firmly structured. This is Beaujolais for aging, an impressive wine ready to mature over five years or more.  — R.V.  (11/1/2009)

Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes 2007 Javernières Gamay (Morgon)

Desvignes is blessed with part of Javernières, at the heart of the Côte du Py, a schist and clay site exposed well to south and west. This wine is solid, tannic and structured, finely balanced. The acidity is important here, suggesting ageworthiness, while the fruits are still enjoying their ripe, black berry primary stage of development.  — R.V.  (11/1/2009)

Georges Duboeuf 2009 Côte de Py Gamay (Morgon)

From the most famous slope in Morgon, this is a powerful wine, its tannins still working their way into the fruit. Black cherries, and sweet plums are dominated by a firm, concentrated structure. Give this wine another year.  — R.V.  (12/31/2010)

As rich as it is tannic, this is powerful and concentrated. It shows the rich 2009 fruit at its best, full of sweet berries, deliciously ripe. Enjoyable, while it is also serious.  — R.V.  (12/31/2010)

The 2009 vintage of this wine was one of the stars from Georges Duboeuf, and this 2010 fits the same pattern. It has great richness, spice, black cherry fruits, the acidity offering the fruity side of the wine. Ready for aging two years.  — R.V.  (10/1/2011)

Domaine Jean Foillard 2006 Côte du Puy Gamay (Morgon)

  1. $29
Puy means a hill, and the steep slopes of the Côte du Puy offer great exposure for the vines. The result is a densely structured, very muscular wine that shows richness as well as dark tannins. The aftertaste is sweet, streaked with acidity.  — R.V.  (9/1/2008)

Dark-hued wine, dominated by acidity as well as firm tannins. It shows solid, chunky structure, ripe fruit and plenty of sweetness. Of course, there is acidity as well, the charm of Gamay coming through in the fresh cherry flavors. Age 2–3 years.  — R.V.  (10/1/2011)

Paul Beaudet 2009 Côte de Py Gamay (Morgon)

Big, ripe and opulent, its ripe tannins balanced by perfumed red fruits. There is a solid core of dark and smoky dryness, a center that promises good aging. Already, though, the wine is showing its concentration and richness.  — R.V.  (12/15/2011)
