Pomerol is a red wine appellation located on the right bank of the Dordogne River in Bordeaux, France. Unlike the classification systems used in St.-Émilion and the famous 1855 Classification utilized in the Haut-Médoc, there is no such system based on quality and prestige to rank the chateaus of Pomerol. Unlike the Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wines created in the communes situated on the Dordogne River’s left bank, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the choice varieties in Pomerol. While the first impression with Pétrus is the wood, it is the fruit which gradually shows itself. It is extraordinary, this dense fruit, which simultaneously manages to float with elegance. 97-99 Barrel sample. Rich, sweet and concentrated, with a definite spicy character and sweet, soft tannins. This is richer than many Pétrus in the past, textured like velvet, but with final acidity.

Denis Durantou’s obsessive search for perfection paid off handsomely with this stunning 2000. Despite the richness of the fruit, there is still a sense of lightness to the wine which makes it surprisingly easy to comprehend at this stage. The Cabernet Franc perfumes couterpoint the rich Merlot, while the wood underpins everything.
