Château Thieuley 2000 Reserve Francis Courselle Red (Bordeaux Supérieur)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
A very polished performance from one of the best wine producers in Bordeaux’s Entre-deux-Mers region. The color is brightly purple. Sweet fruit aromas go through to the modern, smooth flavors, balancing new wood and ripe black fruit. While the wood tannins dominate at the moment, they should soften, and this will become a fine, ageworthy wine.  — R.V.  (12/1/2002)

A dark colored wine, with aromas of wood and black fruits. Dense, concentrated, quite dry, but powerful and ripe at the same time, it is a very complete with wine good complex acidity as well as dry tannins and rich fruit. The effect is traditional in style, but the tradition has been modernised.  — R.V.  (11/15/2002)

Domaine de Courteillac 1999 Red (Bordeaux Supérieur)

  1. $14
Michel Rolland is the consultant for this wine, and it shows in the hallmark dark purple color, the extracted ripe fruit and concentrated dry tannins. But it is certainly a well-crafted wine, that enough structure to make it ageworthy.  — R.V.  (12/1/2002)

Château Thieuley 2004 Réserve Francis Courselle Red (Bordeaux Supérieur)

  • Editors' Choice
This 100% Merlot is named after the patriarch of Château Thieuley, still active, who built the estate into one of the benchmarks of the Entre-deux-Mers region of Bordeaux. Smoky aromas lead to crisply ripe black fruit flavors and some solid, dry tannins. Age this wine for 3–4 years.  — R.V.  (6/1/2007)

Another of the properties of Jean-Louis Despagne. This wine is rich and intense with flavors of mint and eucalyptus which give it an exotic element. It is powerful and concentrated, with soft tannins. It will be ready to drink in two or three years.  — R.V.  (12/1/2002)

Château Lestrille Capmartin 2003 Red (Bordeaux Supérieur)

It’s obvious that the Roumage family sees their future in quality, even at the basic Bordeaux level. This is a wine that punches way above its station, the fruit ripe and rich enough to sustain a heft of wood, giving spice and blackberries together in a satisfying amalgam.  — R.V.  (11/1/2007)

Château Cadillac 2006 Cuvée J.J. Lesgourgues Red (Bordeaux Supérieur)

  1. $16
This top cuvée from Château Cadillac has great fresh black currant fruits, dark plum skins and sweet tannins. It is also very obviously aged in wood, and this element needs to calm down. Wait another year, or decant now.  — R.V.  (3/1/2009)

Château Lamothe-Vincent 2006 Héritage Red (Bordeaux Supérieur)

Rich, solid, with ripe spice and black plum flavors. The considerable richness is balanced with dark tannins, which give a sense of fine-grained texture to this solid wine.  — R.V.  (3/1/2009)
