Maison Champy 2008 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

Dark colored, highly perfumed wine, packing rich fruit with its ripe, chunky structure. Black berries give a juicy character, taming the acidity, and allowing the wood smoke to wreath around the wine. Age for at leasy six years, but this can withstand more.  — R.V.  (12/31/2010)

Maison Jessiaume 2008 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $110
Mineral textured, this wine pushes the power of wines in Gevrey-Chambertin. It is all tannins, dark structure, powerful acidity, very concentrated. It needs many years—10 or more.  — R.V.  (5/1/2011)

Henri de Villamont 2007 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

  • Cellar Selection
Luscious and seriously structured, this is a wine that offers the dense texture of a Gevrey Grand Cru vineyard. It has rich fruit, touched by chocolate and licorice, as well as ripe black fruits. For aging over 4–5 years and more.  — R.V.  (12/31/2010)

Faiveley 2004 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $123
From a 3.75-acre parcel of this grand cru, this is stunning red Burgundy, amazingly complex, lushly fruited and—yes—ageworthy. Plum and black cherry flavors lead the way, but they’re joined by notes of meat, earth, wild game, mushroom and saddle leather. Full and lush in the mouth, this is richly tannic but not hard, as some vintages have been in the past.  — W.E.  (11/1/2006)

Maison Champy 2006 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $125
A dense, almost heavy wine, with smoky, licorice flavors that dominate the fruit. It is firm, big, solid, the sort of wine that demands attention with its concentration and powered structure. It may need time for aging, but already the power and weight are there.  — R.V.  (12/31/2008)

Chanson Père et Fils 2003 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

This is one of the smaller of the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Crus. It produces wines of considerable firmness and dryness, at least initially. This wine is certainly quite tough and firm. It is very foursquare and solid, needing time for fruit to emerge.  — R.V.  (3/1/2007)

Maison Champy 2004 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

  1. $120
Classic Gevrey-Chambertin, with all its structure and its velvety, intense fruits, this wine already offers full pleasure. If the tannins promise some aging, they do not detract from the rich, sweet fruits and the light, fresh acidity.  — R.V.  (3/1/2007)
