Maison Champy 2008 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)
Dark colored, highly perfumed wine, packing rich fruit with its ripe, chunky structure. Black berries give a juicy character, taming the acidity, and allowing the wood smoke to wreath around the wine. Age for at leasy six years, but this can withstand more.

From a 3.75-acre parcel of this grand cru, this is stunning red Burgundy, amazingly complex, lushly fruited and—yes—ageworthy. Plum and black cherry flavors lead the way, but they’re joined by notes of meat, earth, wild game, mushroom and saddle leather. Full and lush in the mouth, this is richly tannic but not hard, as some vintages have been in the past.

Maison Champy 2006 Pinot Noir (Mazis-Chambertin)

$125
A dense, almost heavy wine, with smoky, licorice flavors that dominate the fruit. It is firm, big, solid, the sort of wine that demands attention with its concentration and powered structure. It may need time for aging, but already the power and weight are there.

Classic Gevrey-Chambertin, with all its structure and its velvety, intense fruits, this wine already offers full pleasure. If the tannins promise some aging, they do not detract from the rich, sweet fruits and the light, fresh acidity.
