Domaine Michel Lafarge 2006 Clos des Chênes Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Volnay)

  • Cellar Selection
Tannic and structured, chunky in style and texture. There are smoky flavors, acidity, berry fruits and black cherries as well as richness. There is a certain severity here, the wine passing through a firm stage before developing further complexity. Age for another six years.  — R.V.  (12/31/2010)

Louis Jadot 2009 Clos de la Barre Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Volnay)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $68
The walled Clos de la Barre is a Jadot monopoly. This 2009 has great depth of flavor, hinting at the Volnay richness while remaining structured. That makes it a concentrated wine, red and black fruits mingling with wood and intense acidity. For long-term aging over six years and more.  — R.V.  (5/1/2012)

Louis Jadot 2005 Clos de la Barre Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Volnay)

This wine’s dark red color is a giveaway for its power. There are plenty of solid fruits as well as dark tannins, but they are wrapped in a velvet coat of ripeness and sumptuous textures. Strawberries, with just a touch of sweetness, are found on the finish of this delicious wine.  — R.V.  (8/1/2008)

Xavier Monnot 2005 Clos des Chênes Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Volnay)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $76
The great Clos des Chênes has produced a finely structured wine. It offers both beautiful red fruits that spread luxuriously in the mouth, and a dark, solid core of dry tannins that promise aging. The balance is impeccable, just the right amount of fresh, juicy acidity adding its lift to the mix.  — R.V.  (10/1/2009)

Domaine des Comtes Lafon 2008 Clos des Chênes Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Volnay)

Already a beautifully balanced wine, with firm tannin, ripe cherry fruits and a fine, elegant structure. A plush feel is just beginning to develop, showing through the tight, closed youthful texture.  — R.V.  (12/31/2010)

Domaine Michel Lafarge 2007 Clos des Chênes Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Volnay)

A delectable, perfumed wine, with sweet and intense fruit flavors and a soft, velvet character. Soft Pinot Noir, full of black fruits, plums and red cherries. Needs medium-term aging, perhaps four years.  — R.V.  (12/31/2010)

Domaine Jacques Prieur 2009 Clos de Santenots Pinot Noir (Volnay)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $149
This monopole (single owner vineyard) has produced a wine of great depth and concentration, packed with black fruits, berries and a smoky wood character. It’s an impressive wine, very rich and with sufficient layered acidity. Very ageworthy.  — R.V.  (9/1/2011)
