Château Margüi 2007 Rolle (Coteaux Varois)

  1. $27
This wine is entirely barrel-fermented and aged, and it shows in its toasty, smoky aromas and rich texture. Touches of honey, peach and melon testify to the ripeness of the fruit, which is 90% Rolle, 10% Ugni Blanc. Despite the wine’s richness, it retains its focus, picking up a bit of chalky minerality on the finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Château Margüi 2005 Syrah-Cabernet (Coteaux Varois)

  1. $25
This is 80% Syrah, but the 20% Cabernet Sauvignon shows more right now, delivering cassis and tobacco aromas and flavors that mark the nose and palate. Syrah provides depth and roundness, as well as supple tannins. Half the wine is aged in barrel, so there are hints of vanilla as well. Nicely balanced.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Château Routas 1999 Rouviere Rosé (Coteaux Varois)

  • Best Buy
  1. $9
The price and reddish-pink color don't distinguish it from the scores of other Provencal roses, but once you breathe in the aromatics and place some of this mint-tinged tongue-teaser in your mouth, you'll be sold. --M.M.
This wine reappeared as a Top 100 Best Buy in the 2000 Best of Year issue.

Chateau La Calisse 2006 Rosé (Coteaux Varois)

  1. $18
For a Coteaux de Varois, this shows a good amount of minerality, usually associated with cool appellations. This medium-bodied rosé features hints of red apples, currants and citrus that finish long and stony.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Château Margüi 2007 Rosé (Coteaux Varois)

  1. $20
A 50-50 blend of Cinsault and Grenache, this is a medium-bodied, plump, succulent rosé, hinting at grapefruit and underripe peaches. It’s nicely balanced, with a long, slightly minerally finish. Drink now.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)
