Château de Beaucastel 1998 Cuvée Hommage à Jacques Perrin Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $240
A wine made with a high quantity of Mourvèdre (60%), and produced only in the best years, in memory of François and Jean-Pierre’s father. Superripe, with huge fruit, its’ jammy, gamy and rich. Dusty tannins and excellent black-fruit flavors. The final effect is a wine that epitomizes the potential elegance and the power of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in one glass. A great…  — W.E.  (12/31/2001)

Domaine de la Janasse 2003 Vieilles Vignes Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $100
From four parcels of vines, all giving different characteristics to the final blend. This is a beautifully structured wine, almost charming at first, and then packing an intense mouthful of fresh, balanced and dangerously delicious fruit. There is a touch of new wood, but the fruit is the star of this great wine. Imported by European Cellars.  — R.V.  (12/31/2005)

Château de Beaucastel 1998 Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $62
A big, rich wine with huge amounts of fruit oozing out of the glass. Great concentration and intensity, with licorice flavors from the Mourvèdre, finishing with chewy tannins. A great year for this wine, which should age well for 15 to 20 years.  — W.E.  (12/31/2001)

Château de Beaucastel 2003 Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $83
One of the big names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this wine justifies the fame of the Perrin family’s property. It is a rich style, but, more importantly, it is beautifully made, structured, dense, with red jelly fruits, a touch of vanilla and a fat, full-bodied, but firm aftertaste. This is a wine for aging—give it at least five years before touching it. Imported…  — R.V.  (12/31/2005)

Domaine de Cristia 2003 Renaissance Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $70
Alain and Baptiste Grangeon make this wine from a small, 3.7-acre plot of old vines. Aged in wood for 2–3 years, it shows definite vanilla characters, with intense, ripe black flavors, great concentration and richness and flavors of cassis and spice. There is a delicious juicy aftertaste to this impressive wine. Imported by World Shippers & Importers Co.  — R.V.  (12/31/2005)

Domaine de Cristia 2006 Vieilles Vignes Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $120
This old vine cuvée draws upon 80-year-old Grenache, vinifed in cement and then aged in used barriques. The result is a wine marked by touches of coffee, chocolate and vanilla but dominated by plush layers of cherries and spice. Gentle tannins linger on the finish, but this is delicious now. Drink through 2016.  — J.C.  (12/15/2009)

Domaine de Vieux Telegraphe 1998 Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $42
Very complex, this is a major-league red with a tight but deep nose of black fruits, spice, and tar. The deep yet closed fruit on the palate is accented by pronounced clove, tarragon and anise notes. Beautifully structured, with a velvety texture and fine fruit-to-acid balance. This impressive bottling finishes long, with dark fruit and cocoa notes. It virtually…  — M.M.  (12/31/2001)

Bosquet des Papes 2003 Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes Red (Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

  1. $50
Named after a corner of the vineyard where blackbirds (merles) sing, this is a wine made from old vines, 80–90 years old. It is huge, dry and very tannic at this young stage. But just wait for it to open out into its full glory of packed black fruits, and superb concentration. Imported by Monsieur Touton Selection Ltd.  — R.V.  (12/31/2005)
