Deep and brooding with a nose of brush, Provençal herbs, olive and meat. Full without being heavy, it’s complex and structured, the palate packed with flavor, showing coffee, licorice, dry berry, olive and a decidedly horsey-leathery component. Finishes with a long espresso and pepper fade. Drink 2003–2010.

This wine appears to be in a somewhat dormant phase, only stubbornly revealing hints of violets and bacon on the nose. Fortunately, you can taste the potential in its blackberry and cured meat flavors and long, mouthwatering finish. Drink 2008-2015.

Great ripe fruit is just beginning to show through this huge, dense wine. It’s big, and dark and, obviously still very young. But it is going to develop into a fine, solid dark wine which will age over many years. Buy now, start to enjoy in 5 years.

This is old-style winemaking, but in the best sense. It is big, dominated at this stage by tannins. The fruit is dark, brooding and intense. It has layers of wood (of which 20 percent was new), while the acidity still needs to soften out. This will age, maybe 10-12 years.

Slightly herbal on the nose, without the great intensity of some vintages, but still having pretty peppered raspberry aromas. This is a bit light in weight, but wonderfully supple, elegant and well-balanced. Finishes long, with silky tannins and a touch of cranberry. Drink now–2014.

Fragrantly herbal and peppery on the nose, even coming a little close to vegetal before pulling back and showing more cherry fruit. This is a lightweight effort, but very pretty and perfumed, ideal for drinking while waiting for the blockbuster 2003 to mature. Drink now–2015.

A textbook example of the flavors one expects to find in Côte Rôtie, laden with hints of smoke, bacon, herbs and green olives, all framed by silky tannins and a delicate structure. The finish is long and mouthwatering. It’s drinking well now, but shows the balance to age through at least 2017.

This offering from Les Vins de Vienne offers a chunky mouthful of cassis and plum fruit, accented by notes of smoke and cedar. The finish is soft and plush, so there’s no need for extended cellaring. Drink now–2017.
