Seebrich 2006 Niersteiner Oelberg Beerenauslese Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $48
Sweet and slightly viscous in texture, this wine lacks some aromatic flourishes, sacrificing complexity for purity of its pineapple, apple and citrus flavors. Yet because of its balanced, crisp acidity, the wine still sings, finishing long and mouthwatering. Drink now–2030.  — J.C.  (12/15/2007)

Rheingraf 2010 Alte Reben Trocken Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $55
Rheingraf’s 2010s look to be terrific, and this bottling, from old vines, starts fast. Mouthwatering notes of honey, truffle and petrichor emerge, followed by a wine that’s plush and mouthfilling yet structured; ripe yet crisp. Drink now–2020.  — J.C.  (12/1/2011)

Complex, intense nose of fresh honeysuckle, tangerines, marmalade, spice, dried apricots, golden raisins and an earthy minerality abound. Delightfully rich and sweet, but lively and fresh, with nicely balanced racy acidity. Generous concentration of flavor that coats the whole palate and lingers to a sweet but vibrantly juicy finish.  — W.E.  (3/1/2011)

Battenfeld-Spanier 2008 Hohen-Sülzen Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $50
Oliver Spanier works his vineyards organically, something that’s still not terribly common in Germany. From limestone soils—also not that common—this is a truffle-scented wine, with hints of honey, citrus and crushed stone. It’s undeniably ripe, yet remains fresh and zesty through the long, gravelly finish.  — J.C.  (12/1/2011)

Louis Guntrum 2005 Niersteiner Rehbach Spätlese Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $23
This wine pleases from start to finish, beginning with mouthwatering aromas of zesty limes and green apples and then adding plump, mouthfilling flavors of melon. Ends long, with pepper, spice and mineral notes.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

Freiherr Heyl zu Herrnsheim 2003 Baron Heyl Nierstein Riesling Spätlese (Rheinhessen)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $24
Starts with slightly floral apple and pear aromas, developing tons of tropical fruit flavors on the palate; soft and inviting yet full-flavored. Not a simple fruit bomb, as it reveals smoky, minerally nuances on the long finish.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)

Rheingraf 2010 Trocken Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $23
Just a shade less potent than Rheingraf’s Alte Reben bottling, this is nevertheless excellent, and a great value. Hints of honey, truffle and wet stones combine easily into a harmonious wine that finishes with great energy and length.  — J.C.  (12/1/2011)

Freiherr Heyl zu Herrnsheim 2005 Baron Heyl Kabinett Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
A fairly big, broad-shouldered wine that displays ripe baked apple and spice scents, but also intense minerality. The slightly oily texture comes off like creamy molten rock, finishing long and mostly dry, with lingering slatey notes.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)
