Sauska 2010 Cuvée 13 Red (Villány)

  1. $27
Cuvée 13 is Sauska’s entry-level bottling, but its elegance and structure seem to indicate otherwise. Sweet and just a bit earthy on the nose, the palate is pristine with a concentrated core of crisp black fruit accented by sprays of fresh mint and violet. A beautifully balanced example of dry Hungarian red wine.  — A.I.  (12/15/2011)

Gere Attila 2007 Kopar Cuvée Red (Villány)

  1. $60
Luscious, ripe black-fruit and sweet spice notes are gorgeous on the nose and palate of this penetrating, yet impeccably structured wine. Rippling minerality and bright acidity balance out the bold flavors, hefty alcohol and big, chunky tannins. This is intense from start to finish.  — A.I.  (12/31/2012)

Vylyan 2008 Pinot Noir (Villány)

  1. $25
Shades of crushed stone and granite add a penetrating minerality to the ripe, rich raspberry and cherry flavors of this nervy wine. A hint of dried herb and velvety tannins round out the finish that’s long and lingering.  — A.I.  (12/31/2012)

Bock 2003 Capella Cuvée Red (Villány)

  1. $78
This Cab blend proves that Hungarian reds are becoming more of a contender on a global level. An enticing wave of pepper and wooded spice on the nose rolls into flavors of juicy red fruit, pepper, raspberry and wood on the tongue. The structure is solid but elegant, so though the wine can age, it’s good to drink now. Balanced and stylish overall.  — S.K.  (5/1/2008)

Gere Attila 2007 Solus Merlot (Villány)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $76
The Solus Merlot is unabashedly ambitious, with upfront vanilla from toasty new oak, a high level of extraction and a dense, black core of ripe fruit. It’s full bodied, with steely tannins and a long finish of fig and char. Try with a pan-seared steak.  — W.E.  (6/1/2010)

Sauska 2008 Cuvée 11 Red (Villány)

  1. $37
Sauska’s premiere bottling, the Cuvée 11 has a hefty dose of Cabernet Franc, giving it a distinct spice and bramble character. It’s not a dainty wine at 15% abv, but the palate is clean with focused red fruit accented by fresh herbs and balanced tannins.  — A.I.  (12/15/2011)

What a lovely wine this is from Hungary, with its heady cedar/cigarbox and plum aromas and elegant, plush flavors. Soft tannins, good structure, and ageability add to the wine's appeal. Complexity without a headache--a wine with class.  — S.K.  (8/1/2007)
