Cascina Chicco 1997 Bric Loira Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $26
A splendid wine that is both dense and complex. Very pleasing and well-integrated black-cherry, herb and toast aromas open to a mouthful of concentrated fruit, pepper, coffee, cake and more. Top-notch.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Monti 1999 Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $37
Barbera has an uneven record, but the best can be quite impressive, and this is a fine example. From the opening notes to the long finish, it offers loads of cherry, spice and vanilla. Well-balanced, with medium body, soft tannins and good acid, this handsomely crafted wine should provide great drinking over the next two to six years.  — M.N.  (9/1/2001)

Gianfranco Alessandria 2006 Vittoria Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $34
Vittoria is one of the best Barbera d’Alba wines you will ever taste. Chocolate fudge, powdered mocha, blackberry and exotic spice waft gently off the nose of the luscious but delicate Barbera d’Alba. The wine is dense and round (it’s aged in oak, 50% of which is new barrique).  — M.L.  (12/31/2009)

Attilio Ghisolfi 1997 Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
Handsome nose of dark cherry fruit, chocolate and toast. Rich and mouthfilling, with good fruit that is buttressed, but not overshadowed, by oak. Moderate acidity and tannins, but nothing harsh or off-putting. Layered fruit with chocolate and licorice on the long mouthwatering finish. Best Buy.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Aldo Conterno 1996 Conco Tre Pile Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $37
Tight and powerful nose of funky barnyard, oak char and earth. Complex flavors of tobacco and bramble bush are intermixed with more basic cherry, chocolate and mint. An intellectual wine for Piedmont fans to ponder.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Seghesio 1997 Vigneto della Chiesa Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $30
Lots of oak along with tobacco, menthol and cherry fruit. A very compact, intense core of black fruit leads into a long chocolaty, spicy finish that tastes a lot like a cup of espresso. A very good, deeply layered wine.  — W.E.  (4/1/2000)

Bruno Rocca 2000 Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  1. $45
Ripe and rocking, with huge extract and aromas of bacon, black cherry and fine-grained oak. What a specimen this is; the palate blasts with blackberry and spiced meat, while the finish comes on like a freight train. Notes of jerky, leather and bitter chocolate add grit to the pure fruit that defines this wine.  — M.S.  (12/15/2003)

Conterno Fantino 2003 Vignota Barbera (Barbera d'Alba)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $27
The barrique regime at Conterno Fantino seems to work wonders for this Barbera, adding just the right amount of menthol, vanilla, cinnamon and chocolate to the black cherry flavors. Long and supple on the finish, with a creamy mouthfeel. Drink now. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.  — J.C.  (3/1/2006)
