Brunello di Montalcino Wines

Situated just below the area of Chianti lies the Brunello di Montalcino Wine Region. Based on the Brunello clone of Sangiovese, some of the most collectible and popular wines in all of Italy are produced in Montalcino, according to our Brunello di Montalcino Wine Guide. With one of the warmest and driest climates in Tuscany, grapes from Montalcino yield wines of intense color and body, with bright acidity and strong, ageworthy tannins. Our Brunello di Montalcino Wine Reviews illustrate how most of the wines from the region offer black fruit and cocoa flavors as well as violet and leather nuances. In 1980, Brunello di Montalcino was awarded the highly-esteemed DOCG designation and is now home to over 200 different producers. 1. $275
This beautiful riserva shows enormous thickness and blackness, like midnight of a new moon. The wine delivers impenetrable density, extraction, black fruit, spice, berry preserves, licorice, asphalt, ground black pepper, cherry liqueur and crème de cassis. There are seemingly no limits to the intensity and complexity here. The mouthfeel is dense, plush, firmly…  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

Casanova di Neri 2006 Cerretalto Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $215
Cerretalto delivers aromas of natural complexity and oak-driven tones of cinnamon, clove, chocolate and exotic spice. The fruit is dark, dense and ripe. There’s extra roundness and density in the mouth that holds together the wine’s firm tannins and its crisp, acidic component. Hold 10–20 more years.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

Capanna 2007 Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello di Montalcino)

Capanna’s offering in 2007 is extremely bold, dark and opulent. Valdicava 1999 Madonna del Piano Riserva Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $130
Fresh asphalt, burning timber, bitter chocolate, and anything else that connotes “darkness” is what this heavyweight is about. And as rough as that may sound aromatically, on the palate it’s polished like a gemstone, with just enough grit and guts to push it forward. The fruit, meanwhile, is sensational, a panoply of black plums and cherries infused with cocoa and…  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi 1999 Castelgiocondo Riserva Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $100
Tight as nails on the nose before it explodes on the palate in a cacophony of cherry, cassis, black plum, tobacco and chocolate. It’s like the best cigar and a great red wine rolled into one. Yes, the tannins are hammering and yes, the acidity is forward. But that only means this brilliant Brunello should age for 15 years without batting an eyelash. Imported by Folio  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)
