Castello di Ama 1995 Cru Bellavista Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $150
One of Ama’s single-vineyard bottlings, this meets the requirements to be called Riserva, yet is never labeled as such. Tautly acidic, yet beautifully balanced by ample cherry-raspberry fruit. The finish is huge - long and wonderfully layered.  — J.C.  (11/15/1999)

Borgo Scopeto 1998 Misciano - Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $35
The label reads Chianti, but this is more about deep, driving black fruit than typically racy Sangiovese. It kicks off with the purest scent of smashed berries, and then offers up a supercharged black-cherry-laden palate with far more hedonistic weight than starching acids. The wine finishes with power and warmth.  — M.S.  (8/1/2002)

Fonterutoli 2000 Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $26
Very dark, rich and chocolaty—and pretty darn oaky, too. But oh, what size and prowess. The nose is pure hickory smoke, leather and black fruit, while the palate overflows with cassis, black plum and pepper. The mouthfeel is silky yet aggressive, with big tannins and pulsating acids. And the coffee and cacao on the finish go on and on.  — M.S.  (11/15/2003)

San Fabiano Calcinaia 2001 Cellole Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
Gorgeous stuff; the real deal in terms of meaty, modern Chianti. And from an excellent year, which explains why it’s so saturated and rich. For lovers of hefty, fruity reds that have tannin and structure but can still be enjoyed now, this is your ticket. It is deep, full-bodied and packed with tobacco, chocolate and Tuscan sunshine.  — W.E.  (4/1/2005)

Dievole 2000 Novecento Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $37
Exotic, luxurious and lush; super ripe and intense, but cuddly and lush, with a splendid texture. Aromas of smoked meats, cinnamon and coffee are more savory than sweet. Tastes generous, with black fruit floating on ripe tannins. Finishes very long.  — W.E.  (4/1/2005)

Fontodi 2004 Riserva Vigna del Sorbo Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

This is an extremely elegant and beautiful wine that is tight and compact while being intense and generous at the same time. It offers luscious notes of ripe cherry, blueberry fruit and piquant highlights that recall Asian spices (10% Cabernet is added to the blend). It has a gorgeous mouthfeel, bright fruit flavors and silky tannins.  — M.L.  (9/1/2008)

Castello di Bossi 2004 Berardo Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $41
Sophisticated and intense, this is an extraordinary wine that performs beautifully both in terms of nose and mouth. The aromas are broad and all-encompassing, including blackberry, red currant, vanilla and pretty shadings of exotic spice. The mouthfeel is lively and generous and lasts a very long time.  — M.L.  (6/1/2009)

Castello di Bossi 2007 Berardo Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
Berardo Riserva is an amazing achievement with elegant beauty and perfumed aromas of blue flowers, forest fruit and spice. Great structure and a naturally smooth consistency help support the tight tannins.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)
