Lovely aromas of black cherries and plums bust from the glass, followed by hints of vanilla and cedar. This lush, richly textured wine never seems overly ripe or heavy, delivering ample fruit and cigarbox flavors. Finishes long, with hints of anise and tobacco. Balanced to drink or age; drink now-2015.  — W.E.  (4/1/2005)

This cru expression of Sangiovese was born in 1974 and offers beautifully plush and rich aromas of dark chocolate, cherry and opulent vanilla. The wine is very smooth, soft and long-lasting in the mouth. It’s a wonderful and very pleasurable wine.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)

From Frescobaldi’s gorgeous Nipozzano estate, this Riserva Sangiovese (with small percentages of Malvasia Nera, Cabernet and Merlot for extra density and intensity) opens with impressive generosity and personality. It offers lingering flavors of cherry, chocolate and dark spice.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)

Frescobaldi 1997 Montesodi - Castello Di Nipozzano Sangiovese (Chianti Rufina)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $54
The black-cherry, plum and soy elements of the deep, almost profound, bouquet set you up for a serious wine. Full and powerful—but supple and even; reserved—but subtly strong, it offers up seamless black-cherry, chocolate and earth flavors. Finishes long, with firm but refined tannins and polished, dark fruit flavors. Best from 2004–2015.  — W.E.  (4/1/2001)

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi 2004 Castello di Nipozzano Vigneto Montesodi Sangiovese (Chianti Rufina)

  1. $45
This is a bold, modern wine that confidently presents savory notes of plump cherry, toasted nut and mineral shadings that are well balanced and flawlessly integrated. Nor is the wine shy in the mouth, where it boasts black fruit flavors and a firm, tight composition. Aged in new oak for 18 months.  — M.L.  (11/1/2007)

Frescobaldi 1997 Nipozzano Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Rufina)

  1. $22
The bouquet of this elegant, reserved wine is muted right now, but the berry and leather notes that show display real class. Medium bodied, with tart cherry flavors and an appealing slate-chalk element, this wine has a distinctive palate and profile. Closes beautifully with even tannins, nice cassis and licorice notes and a handsome perfume.  — W.E.  (4/1/2001)

Spalletti 1997 Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Rufina)

  1. $20
This round, darkly-hued, well-balanced wine has deep cherry fruit and cedar accents. Hints of licorice, mineral and toast complement the fruit. Nice balance and mouthfeel, too, and it’s lively right through the finish. Drinking well now.  — W.E.  (4/1/2001)

Frescobaldi 1999 Montesodi - Castello Di Nipozzano Sangiovese (Chianti Rufina)

  1. $40
Racy and quick, with modest tannins and deep black-fruit and berry flavors. Traditional Chianti is defined by wines like this. It has a solid and necessary tannic structure but enough richness to offset any hardness that may stem from the tannins. The finish is plush and easy, with a full batch of chocolate and coffee. Give it a year or two if possible. —M.S.  — M.S.  (12/31/2002)
