Kim Crawford 2000 Tietjen Chardonnay (Gisborne)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Don’t look for subtlety here. This is a lush, lusty offering that’s loaded with coconut and toast from American oak upfront, but also oozes with oranges and mangoes. Drink this one young to enjoy its plump exuberance.  — J.C.  (5/1/2001)

Matua Valley 1997 Judd Estate Hand Picked Chardonnay (Gisborne)

  1. $40
Flirts with splinterdom, dominated at first by copious buttered-popcorn and vanilla-oak aromas. But in the mouth there’s no denying the lushness and quality of the underlying fruit, which brings tangerines, limes and other citrus fruits to mind. Very oaky. Very New World. Very good.  — J.C.  (10/1/2000)

House of Nobilo 1998 Fall Harvest Chardonnay (Gisborne)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
A great value from this old winery, founded more than 50 years ago. Ample aromas of green apple, ripe peach, butter and smoke, with fig and melon. Lively acidity dominates the fresh, young, green-apple and peach flavors. Complex and interesting, hard to put down. Best Buy.  — S.H.  (8/1/1999)

Matua Valley 1998 Ararimu Chardonnay (Gisborne)

  1. $45
Much more retrained and understated than the other Matua Valley offerings, this wine still needs a few months to blossom. Tight aromas of pear and apple and a long, powerful finish bode well for the future.  — J.C.  (5/1/2001)

Matua Valley 1998 Judd Estate Innovator Handpicked Chardonnay (Gisborne)

  1. $45
Buttered hazelnuts lead the flavor charge, followed by full, rich fruit that’s creamy and marked by lees contact rather than primary fruit. The finish picks up dried-spice flavors of cinnamon and clove.  — J.C.  (5/1/2001)

Brancott 2004 Ormond Chardonnay (Gisborne)

  1. $24
Toasty, mealy and custardy on the nose, yet this wine has the stuffing to handle it, balancing all those aromas with apple, pear and lemon fruit that steers clear of the overtly tropical notes often found in Gisborne Chardonnay. Slightly long and nutty on the finish. Imported by Pernod Ricard.  — J.C.  (5/1/2006)

Thornbury 2005 Chardonnay (Gisborne)

  1. $19
Textbook Gisborne Chardonnay, marrying ripe peach and pineapple aromas with oaky notes of toasted grain. It’s full and lush, the mouthcoating fruit set off by judicious oak. Finishes toasty and tropical, with plenty of length. Drink now.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Millton 2006 Opou Vineyard Riesling (Gisborne)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
For a wine with only 9% alcohol, this is surprisingly full bodied, with plenty of weight and richness. A bit of kerosene marks the nose, alongside scents of spice and bergamot, while the flavors run toward apple and citrus. It’s a bit sweet (29 g/l residual sugar), but balanced by decent acidity, and it ends in a long, mouthcoating finish. Drink now–2015, possibly…  — J.C.  (9/1/2008)
