Quinta de Pancas 2003 Premium Red (Estremadura)

  1. $80
A limited release (4,000 bottles) of wine from the best casks of 2003, selected after 18 months of wood aging. It certainly is a stunning wine: big, rich, tarry, very polished and ripe. There is great depth of flavor here, solid figs and dried fruits along with ripe black plums. There’s a layer of dry tannin that will soften as the wine ages. Give it another five…  — R.V.  (3/1/2006)

Quinta de Pancas 2003 Reserva Especial Red (Estremadura)

  1. $38
Bordeaux meets Douro in this wine, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Touriga Nacional. They seem to like each other in this powerful, explosive wine. It is dense, perfumed, with very ripe tannins and a great balance between dryness and big, black fruits. This could age well over 5–10 years. Imported by Admiral Wine Imports.  — R.V.  (3/1/2006)

Companhia das Quintas 2005 Quinta de Pancas Grande Escolha Red (Estremadura)

  1. $25
Despite its four years’ aging, this is still young. The Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (with Touriga Nacional and Petit Verdot) sees to that, producing the tightly textured tannins. The wine sits foursquare on structure, the fruit still behind. Wait 2–3 years.  — R.V.  (12/15/2009)

DFJ Vinhos 2006 Quinta do Rocio Red (Estremadura)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
An intriguing blend of Syrah, Merlot, Touriga Nacional and Grenache has produced a delicious, ripe, smooth wine of considerable elegance. The wine floats on the palate, its tannins acting as a light cushion to the berry fruits, coffee and smoked meat flavors, a very sophisticated wine.  — R.V.  (11/1/2008)

  1. $20
A brooding, powerful wine, concentrating perfumed fruit with black berry juice and dark tannins. It does have acidity to balance all the power and richness, but this is a big, solid wine with density of flavor.  — R.V.  (12/15/2009)

Quinta da Cortezia 1997 Touriga Nacional (Estremadura)

  1. $33
One of a growing number of varietal wines, this is from relatively young vineyards and was aged only six months in French oak. So it is very deep and fruity, with tobacco and spice fragrances bursting from the glass. Herbal and a bit wild, it will come together over the next year or two. Good acids and fine but plentiful tannins round out this total package. 450…  — W.E.  (10/1/1999)

DFJ Vinhos 2000 Grand Arte Alicante Bouschet (Estremadura)

  1. $20
In France, Alicante Bouchet is frowned upon for its poor quality. In Portugal, it is capable of making some of the country’s finest wines. This is typical, with its sweet, jelly-like aromas and ripe, dense fruit. There’s an evocative, herby, Mediterranean sunshine feel to it. —R.V.  — R.V.  (12/31/2002)

Quinta de Chocapalha 2001 Red (Estremadura)

  • Editors' Choice
This is a dense, intense wine, a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Alicante Bouchet. It is firmly tannic, but there is plenty of powerful fruit as well. Dark fruit flavors give depth and concentration. This is a fine wine, which will repay several years aging.  — R.V.  (11/1/2004)
